WW: Culinary Adventures in Cirebon, West Java, Indonesia

Culinary adventures in Cirebon, West Java, Indonesia

Welcome back...

Let's continue our adventure. This time, I would like to kindly invite you to join me in my Culinary Adventures in Cirebon, West Java, Indonesia

As I have shared previously (READ:  Kanoman Palace, Cirebon, West Java, Indonesia dan Sunyaragi Cave, Cirebon, West Java) , Cirebon is indeed a special place for me and my family as my late grandpa from my late father was originally coming from Cirebon. While we are here in Indonesia, we take some times to visit this city again and again as we still have many relatives to meet plus lovely attractions that I would like to introduce to my kids as well. That includes the culinary experience here.

Cirebon has ben well known for its delicious cuisine. Empal gentong, empal asem, tahu gejrot and nasi lengko are only few examples of this culinary heaven.  Not to mention the munchies, like ketan gurih, rengginang rebon and emping manis. The list can go on and on.

Empal gentong is the traditional beef stew from Cirebon, cooked with coconut milk and a mixture of Idonesian spices such as kemiri or bitter nut, sereh or lemon grass, laos/lengkuas or galangal, and daun salam or bay leaves. While empal asem is similar, but it is cooked withouth coconut milk. Instead, it uses tamarind water and belimbing wuluh, a special starfruit with has unique sour taste.  Both stew are served with fried onion and slices of fresh spring onion and celery. Tahu gejrot is a special mixture of fried tofu with a sauce made of garlic, chili, tamarind, palm sugar, and sweet soy sauce. My late dad loved tis so much and we cherish this special dish wholeheartedly. We sometimes cook it at home as well. Then nasi lengko is Cirebonese plate of rice with fried tofu and tempe, sprinkled with generous fresh cut cucumber, steamed bean sprout, fried onion, kucai  or chives, with spicy (or not) peanut sauce. Oh my, even as I write this, I am drooling and suddenly hungry.

I might need to write more details about more Cirebonese food at later stage but now, let's see some of those scrumptious palates. Tell me whether it brings out your appetite instantly.

Sambel Hejo Sambel Dadak - Rumah Makan Sunda Djaman Doeloe yang Instagramable

Ada yang familiar dengan sambel dadak?
Sambel hejo?
Ayam goreng basah?
Oncom dan leunca?
Sayur asem?
Tumis peda?
Cimplung?
Karedok?

Instagramable bangeeet soalnya.

So, let me take you to SAMBEL HEJO SAMBEL DADAK RESTAURANT!
Karena restorannya ada beberapa, kali ini aku ajak yang paling dekat dengan rumahku di Rawamangun ya.

Sambel Hejo Sambel Dadak - Rumah Makan Sunda Djaman Doeloe yang Instagramable

Sundanese delicacies and menu are their signature so you make sure you try their wonderful menu.

If you are familiar with Sundanese food, you can definitely enjoy ayam goreng basah, fresh veggies or lalapansambal dadak (chili sauce a la Indonesia that is freshly made) and sambal hejo or the green chili sauce, sayur asem, peda, tempe and tahu

I know I should translate them all ini English but it's good to know the real name in bahasa Indonesia :).

The set menu from Sambel Hejo Sambel Dadak Restaurant Rawamangun

Whenever we come here, we always order the package for two and get some additional a la carte menu such as sayur asem or gurame bakar.
We love the nasi liwet and the hot tea they serve for free here.
Maybe because it is served in a vintage tea jug like what my hubby and I used to have when we were kids.

Here are some of the menus that we love!

First, as appetizers, we have otak - otak or grilled fish cake.

Then my kids' favorite is cimplung or the Sundanese potato fritters.
It's a bit different from the usual perkedel kentang and we love it.

And of course, I love the sambal as well as the signature fried chicken here, ayam goreng basah.
They both are match made in heaven indeed!

What I really love about the Sundanese food is that it has a lo of fresh veggies. It matches the sambal or the fresh chili sauce that they are preparing on the spot based on request. It tastes like heaven (for me)!

The restaurant as I said is pretty.
You can sit inside, on the second floor, or even on the terrace.
They do have tons of vintage items, some are even from my parents' childhood.
And that's exactly what I love about this place

They have a mini studio in the back where you can take picture using the vintage costumes and all the properties. It's really cute indeed. you will definitely love this place!

My family and I didn't want to mis the opportunity to take all those cute photos, for FREE!
And here are some of the photos taken on our last visit there.
Tell me what you think about!

Vintage Lovers and Foodies, Don’t Miss Sambel Hejo Sambel Dadak Rawamangun!

So, let's see what's on the menu!
For sure, they serve traditional Sundanese (tribe from West Java, Indonesia) cuisine which is quite famous in Indonesia.
They have the package called Liwet (for 2 or 3 people) and a la carte menu as well.

Nasi Liwet is the specially prepared steamed rice, cooked with a mixed of traditional herbs like lemon grass, bay leaves and salted fish. The complete package also include ayam goreng basah - fried chicken with traditional spices; tahu and tempe goreng; cimplung or the potato fritters, sambel dadak and sambel hejo - the famous chili sauce; and peda bakar or the grilled salted fish.

You can also have them a la carte, per item or per portion.
Some additional menus like vegetable sautée with tauge and kangkung as well.
Our favorite is also the fish menu, different kind of gurame,  or the carp fish. They do excellent grilled or fried fish on the spot.

The package for 2 persons costs you Rp 75.000,- , while the package for 3 persons is Rp 120.000,-. Complete information on the menu and its prices can be checked at http://sambelhejosambeldadak.com . The outlet that we visited is the one in Rawamangun.

Here are some photos of the menu we enjoy in this place.

Don't forget to check my video at YouTube channel for more stories and photos of those delicious menu plus lovely vintage setting.

And that's not all folks.
Besides those yummy food, they also have free vintage photo booth, complete with all the properties and costumes.
We definitely love it!
The setting is like a traditional hub in the middle of the rice field, complete with paddy, vintage utensils, and more.
Check it out...we had so much fun taking those pictures.

Mbo Jamu Obi :)

Now you know why we love this place sooo much.

If you get a chance to come and visit, here's the complete address.

Wonderful Wednesday with My Purple World, Oh My Heartsie Girls and Friends

What a week I have here!

After spending so many mornings (and afternoon) at the hospital for total check-up and follow up to my hormone therapy regime for breast cancer survivor, this week I have so many farewell parties (mostly lunch and dinner) for colleagues who will be posted in other countries soon.

As I have shared in many posts before, Indonesian culinaries are super duper delicious.
I have been eating in many traditional restaurants here in Jakarta and the surroundings.

Restaurant SHSD..vintage setting!

I have found some cute restaurants near my house, Warung Enjoi and Sambal Hejo Sambal Dadak, famous for its ayam goreng basah. These restaurants are indeed cute, very Instagramable, and the food is good.

I love this fried chicken, traditionally marinated a la Indonesia

A glad of iced tea and sambal, the lovely chili!
Another restaurant that we tried around this week is Fook Yew, Shanghai Bistro and Bubble Tea Lab located in Grand Indonesia Mall.

Fook Yew in Grand Indonesia
I really love these restaurants and although I do pay careful attention to my food intake, I manage to find healthy menu and I specifically ask for not using MSG or flavour enhancer.

One of my fave... bean curd spring rolls. Yuum!

Bon appetite!
