WW: Souvenirs from Papua - Handicrafts, Batik and More

Papua is not only famous for its breathtaking natural beauty, delicious culinary and friendly people, but also its unique handicrafts.

the small sculptures

I didn't really have much time when I visited Jayapura, Papua but I managed to stop at Pasar Hamadi to see some souvenirs. Here, there is not many shops where you can buy souvenirs but those in this market sell most of the artworks. I bet they have special boutiques there although I only found one of them.

some of the sculptures I found

The Papuans are great sculptors and waivers.
I have seen many of their works and love to have some as well.
One of the famous traditional artcrafts they produce is noken bag.

Noken bag

Traditionally made from wood barks and fibres, this bag is famous for being strong and durable. Many mama -mama Papua wear this to literally bring everything, sometimes at the same time, for a long time. Some bags are modified using shells and beads
It is quite pricey as it's fully handmade.

Bracelets, anyone..
Another interesting souvenir you can buy is Batik with Papuan motives. Well, it's not really traditionally Papuan stuff as it's made in Java mostly, but the motives are uniquely Papua, like cendrawasih or bird of paradise, honai or Papuan traditional home/hut, as well as sculptures and/or Papuan warcraft and tribal motives.

I love them all!

Here are some snaps I took while browsing Hamadi market as well as Imingo store by Mamayoo and Aneka Batik Papua for souvenirs.

WW: Jayapura and Its Surroundings

Amidst my full day meeting and packed schedule during our visit to Jayapura, I took the liberty to capture the beauty of Jayapura, the capital city of Papua, and its surroundings.
Here are some snaps I got with my phone, Jayapura at a glimpse!

Jayapura, Papua
Welcome to Jayapura, Papua

We stayed at Swiss-Belhotel Papua Jayapura, located at the city center and overlooking the Jotefa Bay. Every morning, I was blessed with incredible natural landscape and pure seagull song from the bay. It was priceless.

Morning from Swiss-Belhotel Papua Jayapura

Even from above, when we were about to land in this beautiful city, we have been mesmerized by its breathtaking beauty. Sentani Lake in the morning and clear blue sky along the way really made my day. It looks so peaceful!

Above the clouds..minutes before landing
And by the time you stepped out of the plane, clear blue sky and puffy clouds greeted you.

Sentani Airport

At night, we had dinner by the bay and enjoyed the glimmering reflections of the city. The fish and seafood platters in Jayapura are among the freshest and they taste marvelous!

And as I have shared previously at WW: Bukit Jokowi - Jayapura Skyline Papua, the Holtekamp Bridge from afar looks very catchy!

All in all, I love coming back to Jayapura after around 7 years.
May your beauty be well preserved and hopefully I can come and visit you again soon.
