WW: Fort Frederick, St. George's, Grenada

Let's continue our journey to St. George's, Grenada, shall we?

Overlooking the amazing view of St. George's

I'm in love with this country as it has so much in common with my beloved Indonesia.

One thing for sure, we both are the world's largest producers of nutmeg.
This golden spice really spurs up the economy and give this lovely country its fame.
And probably, on a bleaker side, also bring colonialism.

So, on the following day after my endless meetings in this island of spice, we decided to browse around the city. We rent the local taxi from the hotel and I traveled around with my dearest friend, Rie Kadota. We had 2 forts with amazing view from the top, local market and museums. St. George's itself has 4 forts on every corner of the city.

Here are some photos I took from Fort Frederick with its amazing vista and the surroundings. Hope you love it as much as I do!

Welcome to Fort Frederick

It took us about 40 minutes to drive up here. Not because it's far but because of the traffic along those narrow yet cute alleys and road in the city. As we had stopped at the local market before heading here, we managed to eat fresh mangoes along the way. Super yuuum!

clear blue sky!
Fort Frederick is such a lovely place.
You can read a glimpse of its interesting history on the photo below.

Here are more photos from the surroundings of the fort.
I love the fresh yellow frangipani (that's the name of this type of flower, right?), the clear blue sky, fresh breeze, and relatively well-maintained architectures.

Perfect spot for a photo shoot :)

St. George's, Grenada
the vast ocean in front of you..

Uniquely, this fort is not facing the sea but rather backwards.
The fort is facing the city, as the British had traumatic experience of being attacked by the French from inland, instead of the ocean. That's the reason why the canons are also facing the city.

And here's happy me posing on Fort Frederick, wearing my favorite t-shirt saying: I swear I'm a blogger :)

5 Cool Things to Do in St. George’s, Grenada

Welcome to St. Goerge’s, Grenada
Visiting Grenada for your next holiday?
Sounds like a great plan!

This has been a long overdue post since I visited beautiful Greanda in May 2018. So before long, I know I should share more stories about this lovely country situated in the Caribbean.

Happy me joining catamaran sail in St. George’s ♥️♥️
Blessed with amazing weather and long lines of white sandy beaches, lush jungle and waterfalls, mountains and more incredible natural landscape, Grenada has long been known as the Spice Island.

Grenada is indeed one of the world’s major sources for spices, like nutmeg, cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, as well as cocoa.  Interestingly, Grenada originally has its nutmeg from my country, Indonesia is the world’s top producer of nutmeg and Grenada is number two. I guess it all happened during the colonial period, where Grenada was colonized by English. Indonesia was colonized by Dutch for more than 300 years but we had the presence of English for a brief period of time.

My morning stroll at Grand Anse Beach, Grenada
Grenada is composed of three large islands,- Grenada, Cartiacou, and Petite Martinique, with the additional tinier island along the Caribbean or the West Indies. I was privileged to get a chance to visit St. George’s, the capital city of Grenada, as we are invited to the Regional Seminar of the UN Special Committee for Decolonization. My dearest friend, Narissa, from the Permanent Mission of Grenada in New York, had ensure me that we would definitely have great time in her beautiful hometown. And I couldn’t agree more!

I stayed in Radisson hotel at Grand Anse Beach and it was great!
Four days and five nights, we attended the meetings and enjoyed what St. George’s Grenada can offer.

Here are 5 cool things to do in St. George’s Grenada

Enjoying Grand Anse Beach

Grand Anse Beach Grenada

Coming to Grenada and you don’t get a chance to enjoy the world-famous Grand Anse Beach? You gotta go back then :). Grand Anse beach has long been famous for its powdery white sand and turquoise water. Perfect beach weather all year long is a bonus!

Again I was so lucky as my room in Radisson was facing the beach and every morning, I swam and jogged along the beach! So enjoyable!

Diving and Snorkeling

My favorite activities here in Grenada!
On my first morning in Grenada, I signed up directly for a diving trip with Nature Spirit Grenada, the dive center located in my hotel, Radisson Grenada Resort Hotel.
I went to two spots, one is a ship wreck and the other one is packed with coral reef.
I recorded our 25-meeter deep ship wreck diving but I haven’t put it in my YouTube channel. i will.. hopefully soon

Thank you to our host country, the participants of the Seminar also got a chance to enjoy the Catamaran sailing. It is indeed a great experience!

Trying the Local Cuisine

Caribbean food is numero uno!
I just love them all, particularly the fresh seafood and their famous super duper hot chilli!
And for sure the nutmeg and all products using it are must try!
I dis try the nutmeg jelly, spread, bread, chocolate and nutmeg ice cream as well!
There is one soup I tried and loved but unfortunately I forget the name! dang.. I should have noted it down!

Don’t forget to try the chocolate as well! It’s delicious.
If you drink alcohol, Grenada’s rum is hard to beat!

I literally try everything :)

Exploring the historical sites

There are many historical fortresses and building here in this beautiful city.
I went to Fort George and Fort Frederick and the view from above is absolutely stunning!
It is a very interesting mix of French and British occupation and for sure the stories about colonialism is always sad and bitter for the local people.
But the remnants of those dark eras are a great reminder for us all

Shopping in the Local Market

Let's shop!
I came here in the morning and loved it so much!
Such a vibrant ambience and I bought a lot of mangoes!
They are super duper sweet and yummy!
I also got my nutmeg supplies here and met many friendly locals.
The mangoes are super!

For sure there are so many other interesting things you can do in Grenada. These are some suggestions to start with.

I really wish I can stay longer to explore the other side of Grenada or indeed coming back to this beautiful country. Now that I have new best friends there, I feel like coming back here again.

Catamaran Cruise in Grenada

Again I was super lucky to have the opportunity to experience Pure Grenada.
As the Spice of the Caribbean, Grenada has a lot to offer.
For those who wants to know more about Grenada, check out Welcome to Grenada, the Spice of the Caribbean I posted before.

Therefore, after such an intense series of meetings we had with voting hanging on the air (good thing we managed to reach consensus!), we were super ecstatic when the Catamaran Cruise in Grenada was prepared for all of us.
Not only the sailing with music, food and drinks, but also the snorkeling.

This time, let me share a glimpse of the Catamaran sail that my friends and I took in Grenada, as the courtesy of the Government of Grenada for all the participants of the Seminar.

And right at 3 PM, when the sun was scorchingly hot, we sailed around the
We took the 'High Time', the fun boat which took us to the Bay where we had time chatting, enjoying the breeze and snorkeling at the Sculpture Garden.

Happy me, after snorkeling..
Along the way, we see the beauty of St. George's, the Capital city of Grenada.
Dotted with colorful houses and buildings, including forts and churches, St. George's looks beautiful indeed.

On our way back to the Port, we enjoyed beautiful sunset from the boat.
It was magical.
A perfect way to end our day and our hard works.
I held my tears as I whispered my thanks to the Almighty.
For every blessings He has bestowed upon me and my family all these years.

Welcome to Grenada, the Spice of the Caribbean!

Welcome to Grenada, the Spice of the Caribbean!

I am officially exploring the Caribbean and Grenada is my 6th Caribbean countries.
I am super lucky indeed!
In the course of one year, I was somehow assigned to attend meetings and special missions in the Caribbean.
This time, I have Grenada, the Spice of the Caribbean, to explore.
Well, exploring this beautiful place in between meetings :).

And I have to say, I'm in love!
Grenada is truly wonderful.
It has stolen my heart since day one.

Picture this!
Miles of unspoiled white powdery beach and turquoise water, friendly smiles and exquisites cuisine to cater your hunger and the love of food.
And those are only the beginning.

Turquoise water! Heaven..
When I first landed here after a 5-hour non-stop flight, I know it's going to be another unforgettable trip. I came here for work so I have to say I was not ready with all the information about this beautiful country. Instead, I brought all those drafts and documents in my bags. But I have to admit, I tossed everything in my suitcase, including my diving suite and gears.

We were welcome by a special Protocol team from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Grenada. Getting some help with the immigrations and luggages really sped up the process.
We went directly to our hotel from Maurice Bishop International Airport, which is only a short 15 minutes trip. Fast and zero traffic!

Getting to the Island vibes :)
As we touched down at our hotel as well as the venue of the meeting, Radisson Grenada Beach Resort, I felt like waking on the beach instantly!
From the balcony of my beach front room, I could see the famous Grand Anse beach and hear the waves and breezes calling.
Now this is what I call heaven!

view from my room :)
Nevertheless, we arrived at around 3 PM and I was starving.
Together with my Ambassador, we had lunch at the hotel and finished our plates in the restaurant right beside the beach.
I truly enjoyed my plate of vegetable curry roti and callalou soup.
Done with our meals, I unpacked for a while and hit the beach right before sunset.
And Grand Anse beach really lift up its reputation as one of the most famous beaches in the Caribbean!

My best friend for exploring the beach
Before I share more stories of this blissful place, please enjoy some photos I took in my first couple of days in Saint George's, Grenada.
