Indonesian Culinary Haven - Jajan Bareng di Festival Jajajan Bango 2019

Indonesia has been well-known for its amazing culinary.
Traditional food as well as beverages in Indonesia vary and can be pretty much found in every corner of this country.  Encompassing more than 17 thousands islands (yup, you read it correctly, more than 17.000 islands), different cultural background, geographical situation and specific vegetation as well as natural resources from that particular area.

It can be a bit overwhelming as the choices are more than abundant!

In Lampung, my home, for example.
We have Pindang Patin, Pempek or fish cake with sweet sour sauce or cuka, sambal seruit, tempoyak, keripik pisang, kue engkak, segubal, and so many more. Not to mention popular food like Bakso Sony, Pempek 123, siomay Edy, kripik pisang Suseno and Mie Lampung. I just realize I can't stop listing all those yummy food.

Well, considering this foodie culture of Indonesians, Kecap Bango or one of the leading manufactures of the sweet soy sauce, takes this opportunity to gather famous street food vendors from different corners of Indonesia in one big festival.

Festival Jajanan Bango 2019

The Festival was held in the parking lot of Squash Field, Bung Karno Sports Complex, Jakarta, from 15 - 17 March 2019.

In English, perhaps the best way of translating Jajajan is snacks, but usually we buy our jajanan in our favorite street food vendors or small corners in particular areas, traditional markets or malls. Most of the time, the places are way scattered here and there, even located in different provinces.

Then in this Festival, we have them all coming for us!

There are 83 vendors joining the event so you can imagine how delicious our trip here!

That's A LOT of yummy food! 
I have to say I have tried at least a half of them at different point of time.
Some of those famous food vendors are located near my house in Rawamangun, Jakarta.
But some of them are not even in Jakarta!

Welcome to FJB 2019
We came on Sunday, the last day of the Festival and for sure it was already packed since the morning when they started at 11 AM.
We arrived at 12. 15 as we needed to look for a parking spot, which proved to be a big problem for us.

Nevertheless, after lining up and registering ourselves online for the free entry, we finally got inside. We went to special tent to see short stories about Kecap Bango and its contribution to the preservation of Indonesia's traditional culinary. For sure, Kecap Bango has been there for generations and my family loves it!.


After the tens, we finally arrived to the open area where the Festival was held and this is what we had!

LOL.

As it was packed and everyone was pretty much craving for what they love, the line was super long! It was quite a disadvantage for us as it was hot, we were hungry, and we lined up for quite sometimes. But well, it was a special festival with some nostalgic food that I didn't want to miss so we did line up in many of those spots. I only managed to queue at 6 vendors and that took me around 1.5 hours only to line up and get my food ready.

I hope next Festival they will use better time management in order to avoid such long queues everywhere. Since I didn't get empty seats either, we took away most of the food and enjoyed them at home. Oh ya...Sariwangi , our famous Indonesian tea, was also the official tea of this Festival. And when you bought food at 5 or 10 booths, got the stamps for each booth and you could change that with free goodies as well!

Here we go..

First I lined up at Mie Aceh Seulawah and bought a pack of delicious and spicy Mie Aceh.

I like it because it comes with kerupuk and emping, as well as onion and pickles, which make it special.



It's sooo good and spicy! Love it!
 Then we lined up at Sate Padang Ajo Ramon.

Very famous Padangnese Satay and it's super special because the sauce is specially made of beef broth, Indonesian traditional mixed spices, and rice flour.
I wrote the recipe of Sate Padang and tried making it in NYC as well!

Can you imagine the traditional Tongseng, or spicy beef stew, cooked traditionally using the charcoal? Even the smell is certainly different. More delicious!




And as they used special diner plates from Kecap Bango,  we saw many dishes here and there. The clean ones and the dirty ones as well.

All in all, I love the Festival and I guess I will be happy to come back next year.
There are many vendors which had long queues that I didn't manage to try.




Like this Sate Maranggifor example. Although I have tried the original ones years ago, I feel like trying it again here.

We need to come earlier and obviously more prepared as well.
My kids were complaining because they were tired after our morning jogging before coming down here.

Festival Jajanan Bango 2019 is the annual Festival held by Bango, one of Indonesia's leading brand for sweet soy sauce, which features traditional and popular Indonesian culinaries from different parts of the country. 


Welome to Festival Jajanan Bango 2019

It was certainly packed with food enthusiasts and those craving for Indonesian traditional food and those famous food outlets as well as hawkers.

There were around 83 vendors joining this event. Truly heaven for foodies like me LOL.

It's Ramadhan!

Such a wonderful and blessed month for us moslems and I would like to take this opportunity to share one of our favorite, easy-to-make Indonesian food recipes.

As you know, during Ramadhan, we are fasting from before the sunrise until sunset.
So after restraining ourselves from eating and drinking for quite some times (almost 17 hours here in NYC), I try to cook something nice and special for my family. But since we don't really have much energy left after fasting, I always try to prepare simple food that my family love.
And I have to admit, some Indonesian food need extra preparation.
Nevertheless, the one that I'm about to share with you is one of the simplest ones.

And I just realized I haven’t posted any recipes for quite sometimes, by the way.
So let’s hit the kitchen and this time, I have Sambal Goreng Udang - or Indonesian Spicy Shrimp.

Well, don’t get intimidated by the ‘spicy’ name as you can always, obviously, adjust the level of spiciness in this dish.

Sambal itself means chili sauce and sambal goreng literally means fried chili sauce.
Those who are familiar with Indonesian food might get use to the use of sambal here and there, but again you can have a non spicy chili sauce!
Seriously.
Just add extra tomatoes and sugar to thwart the natural kick of chilies and you're good.

I have shared some spicy as well as sambal goreng recipes before, so you can check out sambal goreng tempe dan kentang - spicy crispy fried tempe and potato or botok tempe - steamed spicy tempe, to name a few. 
So now, Are you ready to cook with me?


Ingredients:

Shrimp - 2 lbs, with or without the tails, any size you prefer, clean them.
Shallot - thinly sliced
Jãlapeño- thinly sliced, if you like it hot.

Spices to ground:
Onion - half and chopped
Shallots - chopped 
Chilies - 3-4, or less as desired
Tamarind - 3-4 pieces for extra tanginess. Feel free to take it out.
Salt and pepper - as desired
Galangal - 1 piece, pressed.
Just a little note, I really love this spice as it will add extra aroma to your dish. But feel free to drop it of you prefer to do so. Galangal is easily found in Asian groceries or oriental market.

Green peas for garnish
Coconut milk - 2 spoonful
Vegetable oil for sauté - 1 teaspoonful

The good thing about these ground spices, it is sort of a base paste for many Indonesian food or a like. So you can make them in big batches and store them in the freezer.

How to cook:
First, we prepare the shrimps.
You have the choices of deep frying them or pan frying them in order to use less oil. 
Once done, set them aside.

We then sauté the thinly sliced shallots and jãlapeño, put the ground spice all together.
Cook it for a while until it's fragrant.
You can tell when the spices are well cooked.
I have to admit it's the best part as the spices smell wonderful.
Mix the fried shrimps, wait for a while until all the spices are well mixed and cook it in low heat. Then add the green peas at the end for about two minutes so it won't be overcooked.
And that's it.
Your Indonesian spicy shrimp, sambal goreng udang, is ready :).

Eat it with your hot steamed white or brown rice, or sprinkle it over your salad plate.

I have been enjoying their food since my early days here in the Big Apple back in early 2014.
They don't have many options but what they have is the best!
I am talking about chicken and beef gyro as well as falafel over rice or in sandwiches.
With only USD 8 for chicken and beef gyro as well as falafel over rice, and USD 6 for the same thing in sandwiches, no wonder the Halal Guys has become a hit since I don't know when :).
Besides, you can also enjoy baklava for USD 2 and pita & hummus for USD 3.
So affordable.


Long line indeed


I love the food because it is halal (obviously) and delicious.
I have to say the Halal Guys is one of the pioneers of the American halal food and now they have become an international restaurant chain.
I know that the Halal Guys is already open in Indonesia as well.
For us moslems living in a country like the US, finding halal food is not always that easy.
Sometimes we eat everything but the pork and anything that has pork on it, but the best is to  eat halal food which is prepared in a special way.
Nowadays, we have halal food in many parts of NYC, be it food carts or restaurants.

And as Ramadhan is here, my family and I truly enjoy this delicious and halal plates for our ifthar.  Alhamdulillah.
