WW: The Majestic Anak Krakatau

The Majestic Anak Krakatau, located in Sunda Strait, Lampung
I was privileged to see Anak Kratakau, an active volcano, from close proximity, during the educational trip to Krakatau Islands.

Anak Krakatau, an active volcano

We managed to stop at its black sand beach, after we got the permission from the local natural resources conservation body.
We went there for educational and research purposes as the follow up of international seminar on Krakatau held a day before.

Let me share some photos here, before writing and sharing more stories from the series of events at Lampung Krakatau Festival 2018 which I attended.

When we went there, the volcano was still active

5 Tips to Follow when Traveling with Kids

5 Tips to Follow when Traveling with Kids

Traveling with infants comes with its challenges. But, parents know their child, and if they keep them on their schedule and try to limit their exposure to excess activity, they usually manage well. Let’s face it. If you can find a quiet bathroom, you can usually get a 2 month old to take their bottle and drift off to sleep.

When you child is over 3 or 4, traveling is an entirely different experience. They want to see and do everything. They get bored in the car, train, or plane. They will test their (and your) limits. But, with some preparation, you can have a successful trip with your child. We will give you some tips to help you accomplish this. These are tips written not by doctors and professional child therapist. These are tips from real life moms and dads who love their kids and know the reality of raising them.

Even the odds
You will find that the minute you board a plane you child becomes the spawn of a superhero. They are like Spiderman. They can climb to places that you would think are impossible. They can reach an object that you are sure they cannot possibly get. This is why we suggest you never travel with less than one adult for every two children. When you have three children, it is very difficult to take them to the bathroom at the mall. Traveling to a place you are unfamiliar with is asking for trouble.

Hunger and thirst is your worst enemy

An adult gets cranky when they are hungry and in a situation where they cannot eat. A child does not know they are getting hungry. Their bodies surprise them. They are happily playing one minute then in a second, their expression changes to one of near panic and they shout, “I’m hungry!” It is important that you take snacks and drinks with you.

Bonus tip: this is one trip. They will not die if they are allowed to eat a little extra sugar or drink soda if that is what you can get. Sometimes giving them a sugary treat gives them the burst of energy that holds them over until you can feed them.

Take their favorite shows with you

No matter where you go, there will be extended periods of time when your child needs to be entertained. If you are going to another state or another country, take the shows they like along. Take a tablet or use your smart phone (don’t forget the chargers), and download or access the shows electronically.

Make it an adventure

Before you leave home, tell them about where you are going. Tell them stories of what they will see and what they will do. Check to see if there are any Children's Theatre and Dance Festivals or costume balls you can take them to. But first make sure you take with you all the necessary equipment, such as dance costumes and accessories, so they can dress up for that occasion. You can also print coloring sheets of the sites and take them along with crayons so they can color them. If you make the adventure exciting for them, they will be easier to manage while on the way. You can talk to them and ask them questions afterwards to see how much they remember.

Take their security

It doesn't matter what it is. Maybe they have a blanket they have always slept with. It may be faded and have mystery stains, and maybe you would rather not take it on a plane. You will be glad you did when they cuddle up with it and fall to sleep. Remember, it doesn’t matter what anyone thinks You will probably never see those other passengers again anyway. So who cares if they think your 5-year old would give up his stuffed monkey with a missing tail.

The key to traveling with kids to make them as comfortable and involved as possible, The only thing you have to do is keep your focus on them and enjoy the memory you are creating as a family. So, whatever the challenges might be, never forget to enjoy the trip with your kids and your loved ones. Have fun!

Have fun!

Cherry Blossoms at Ueno Park, Tokyo, Japan

Before enjoying spring in New York City, I was privileged to see the cherry blossoms at Ueno Park, while I was Tokyo, Japan.
Click here to read my little story in Japan : Hello Tokyo

Ueno Park has been famous to be one of the most favorite places to enjoy cherry blossoms.
And I chose this place to stay over as it is the last stop of Skyliner, the fast train taking us to and from Narita International Airport.

Located at Japan, 〒110-0007 Tokyo, Taitō, Uenokoen, 5−20(as I copied from Google Maps), Ueno Park covers quite a huge area to explore. It have several museums in the surrounding area and more temples as well as shrines to explore. It also has big pond and famous Zoo here. Too bad I only have limited time so I didn't manage to see them all.
But if you want to see the 'old' Japan, with more traditional houses and temples and less skyscraper buildings, then Ueno will be the perfect place for you.

And back to the cherry blossoms!
Be it in the morning, or at night, sakura is forever beautiful.
Those pinkies, rather small petals are fully blooming in a beautiful way.
It looks fragile, yet it stands the test of the wind.
For only the strong one stay and bloom.
Pretty much the survival test of nature.

When I arrived in Ueno on the first leg of my flight, it was already dark. It was only 5.30 but the sun set already and it was dark. Yet as I stepped out of Ueno Park, it was bright  as lights from the neon signs illuminated the pinky flowers dotting the trees. I stopped there, lining up with others as people started taking photos and selfies with the cherry blossoms.

Here's the map of Ueno Park:

Some tips for enjoying cherry blossoms:

1. If you happen to be around, make sure you come down here early in the morning before the park is packed with people, especially in beautiful, warmer days. I came to the park at 7.30 AM and it was beautifully serene, with a few joggers and runners joining me.

2. Makes sure you wear your comfortable shoes as you can walk along the park and it was quite a distance. And mind you, Ueno park is huge, covering many temples, museums, statues, shrines, ponds and even Zoo. As for the cherry trees, it is lining up from Shitamachi Museums to Tajo-Ten jin Shrine/Hanazono Inari Shrine.

3. Get ready to line up. Many people want to enjoy the cherry blossoms as well so people tend to line up neatly and take their turn politely, considering that many people love to do the same.

4. If you have allergies to pollen or similar substances, better stay away of course. Or if you still can tolerate it (and I do know people who have allergies but still can enjoy cherry blossoms to certain extent), better get yourself prepared with the medicine needed.

5. Thinking of having a picnic? Bring the mat and the food you love to have or snatch them from the nearby restaurants or cafes. Well, when I came here the cherry blossoms were not fully blooming so I didn't see too many people yet. By the way, I found the Ueno Station has a great bakery and the pastries are exquisite. I bought some from there and they are yummy indeed.

4. And finally, don't forget your camera and/or your phone. Sometimes we get so excited about seeing something new we forget the important things. Well, that happened to me before.

So, enjoy the cherry blossoms and cheers.

Wonderful Wednesday with Oh My Heartsie Girls

Another beautiful week we have here!

relaxing walk at Central Park..

Thanksgiving has been lovely as I got a great break with my dearest family, with a little shopping here in there. Well, my hubby really enjoyed the Black Friday and he started getting all those electronics we are going to bring back home next year. As for me, I'm happy with all those new dinnerware and bed sheets LOL.

But seriously, we had so much fun decorating the Turkey kit and just relaxed at home.
We went out to Central Park and it was beautiful.

Now, I am packing up my bags once again for last minute work trip to the Caribbean.
Yuuup...Caribbean is calling once again.
I feel sad as it was coincided with the PTO meeting where Obi will be awarded the Best Student of September 2017 and Bo's Parents and Teachers meeting.
But at least I will be back home right before Obi is celebrating her 7th birthday!

This time I might have St. Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda, Jamaica and Bahamas on the roll.
And I just realized I haven't written my story about my trip last summer to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. My oh my..
