WW: Restaurant Indonesia, Napier, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

Food from home is always something you are craving for, wherever you are. The joy of enjoying the menu that reminds you of your beloved family, warm hugs from your grand parents and heart-to-heart talk on the dining table, is immensely priceless.

No matter what nationalities we are, this basic notion is pretty much what many of us are familiar with, especially when you are living outside of your homeland.

As for me, I have been learning to cook various Indonesian food and drink, but I always welcome the opportunity to buy and to order Indonesian food wherever I am. On the last trip to Napier, Hawke's Bay, we managed to get a taste of home. We stopped by at Restaurant Indonesia, serving since 1983 and making it the oldest restaurant in the area.

Although the restaurant is usually closing on Monday - Tuesday due to the shortage of staff during COVID-19, we had this special session and menu at the restaurant as the Ambassador was coming with us as well.

the complete nasi bakar menu

That night, we had Nasi Bakar complete with fried chicken, ikan jambal roti or salted fish, tempe and tahu goreng as well as sayur asam, lalapan and sambal. In addition to that, we also have snapper being cooked as pepes ikan or steamed fish with lots of Indonesian traditional spices. Plus kerupuk or the famous Indonesian chips, to make the menu complete. We also enjoyed Indonesian ice tea with bay leaf and wedang ronde as dessert. Super yum indeed.

Here are some photos I took on the food.

wedang ronde, anyone?

I also love the interior design of the restaurant, with some specific themes reflecting the beauty of Indonesian heritage. It has Papua Room, Balinese and Javanese items and handicrafts, beautiful hand-woven fabrics from Timor and so many more.

For Mas Riza and Mba Vivi Ambadar, the owners of this restaurant, coming and dining to Restaurant Indonesia is not only about enjoying the food and beverages, but it's also about the experience and the 'real feel' of Indonesia. Through these special menus, we embark on a journey of thousand miles away, diving on the endless beauty of Indonesia as well as the amazing and rich culture of this largest archipelagic state. As you get your first bite, you will feel the warmth and friendliness of Indonesians and their love for traditional and distinct taste of the homeland. That's what I felt when I enjoyed my dinner here.

So for you who get the chance to come and visit Napier, don't miss Restaurant Indonesia with its incredible menu.

Wonderful Wednesday with My Purple World, Oh My Heartsie Girls and Friends

It has been a busy week for me and my family.

After receiving our sea cargo from Indonesia, it took days for us to check and get all the items out of the boxes. It has been awfully long as we sent the items since November 2021 and they arrived in the beginning of March 2022. Surely it's one of the longest cargo shipments I had since Melbourne, Geneva and New York! Apparently the combination of COVID-19, lack of shipment heading to New Zealand and the Pacific areas as well as long procedures made us wait too long for our items.

Unfortunately, the liftvan we had was somehow broken on its way here and some boxes got dampen from water. I was so sad to see some hand woven items, shoes and clothes were either broken or very moldy due to this. I have one of my tenun bags being demolished with the mold and my purple Gucci bag got some patches of mold as well. Not to mention some other bags and shoes. We also have to wash and dry clean so many items from the boxes as they have this unpleasant aroma. It was quite a I am calculating all these damages and will definitely claim for the insurance.

On the bright sight, I had the chance to visit more cities in the North Island, namely Hastings, Napier and Hawke's Bay. We had series of meetings with the Mayor of Hastings, as well as business associates and Indonesian communities based in this area. It's always interesting to see the new places and learn more about its history as well as its ties with my country and my people. Too bad it was raining when we were there and we were not at the liberty to explore this charming city on foot. but for sure I am more than happy to go back there again.

WW: Visiting Napier, New Zealand - the Art Deco Haven

Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

Let's continue our trip around New Zealand!

This time, I have the opportunity to enjoy Napier, Hastings and Hawke's Bay, three lovely cities in the region of Hawke's Bay, at the North Island.

The Daily Telegraph Office

It takes us around 5 hours drive from Wellington to reach this area. We passed Palmerston North and the wind farm of  Te Apiti. We saw lots of wind turbines and stopped for a while.

Welcome to Te Apiti Wind Farm

We went through this wonderful, quaint city in the coastal area of Hawke’s Bay, famous for its rich soil, wonderful beaches and agriculture fresh produce. Plus unique art deco dominating architectures in many parts of the city. Truly a lovely place to visit.
one corner at the city center

We have series of meetings with Indonesian community here who will be hosting Batik workshop and fashion show in April. We briefly visited the Creative Art Napier which will be the venue of the workshop. We had dinner at Restaurant Indonesia, one of the oldest restaurant in town, with homey decoration and fantastic, authentic Indonesian food. After a while, I enjoyed nasi bakar komplit, with sayur asem, ayam goreng, ikan jambal roti and sambal, plus pepes kakap and wedang ronde. Heaven!

beautiful snapper pepes! Super yum...

We also met the Mayor as well as the local business. Although we haven’t really got time to explore the city and its lovely corners, but we managed to stop here and there. We got a tour in the District Council and the Opera House as well. I really have to share more in details in the next posts!

For now, here are some photos we took along the way. Enjoy!

Wonderful Wednesday with My Purple World, Oh My Heartsie Girls and Friends

Hello everyone..

I hope March has been treating you good. And I hope it’s not too late to say Happy International Women’s Day to all the amazing ladies out there!

We are still witnessing the spiking numbers of Omicron case here in New Zealand. We already had rapid antigen test twice at the office and thank God, Alhamdulillaaaah, we had negative results. Nevertheless, we still work from the office except for those who are showing some symptoms. The daughter is still having her classes off line, while my son has 2 offline classes only on Wednesday and Friday. Well, hopefully things will be improving soon.

Wellington continues to be in a good mood as we have some beautiful days this week. Lots of sunshine and that means our ourdoorsy activities can be done cautiously by following health protocol. I hope I can share
