Wonderful Wednesday with Oh My Heartsie Girl

2016 is finally here and how is your first week of the new year?
So full of hope? in high spirit? so full of energy and ready for new adventures?
So am I :)
All of us as a matter of fact :).
We started the first days of 2016 by getting closer to nature and we visited Bronx Zoo, again. Surely Bo et Obi love this place and I have to admit we, the adults, do too.

We managed to see the Jungle World this time and it feels like coming back home to Indonesia with its beautiful tropical rain forests and their native residents. Oh how fun to show the kids all those indigenous animals that my hubby and I are so accustomed to see when we were kids :).

Combro - Spicy Tempe and Grated Yucca Fritters

And I guess, one of my (silent) resolutions for 2016 is bringing more Indonesian tradisional food and recipes here in my blog. I do wish I can fulfill that :). 

And to start with, today I have Combro, spicy tempe and grated yucca fritters :).

Combro with C, not K.

One of my favorite all-time favorite, mood-lifting, comfort food :). I know, I have a looooong list of favorite munchies and more than happy to share it with you all.

Kalau di Indonesia, beli combro memang gampang aja. Saya ingat kalau selalu punya andalan tukang gorengan yang buat combro enak di mana pun berada. Di Lampung, di Jakarta, bahkan di kantorku. Tapi memang makin lama makin susah dan makin sedikit yang jualan combro. Mungkin karena membuatnya relatif lebih ribet dibandingkan bakwan, cireng atau tahu isi ya? Atau oncom dan singkong makin mahal harganya? Hmmm. Perlu survey lagi nih :).

Combro, or the abbreviation of oncom di jero, or oncom inside in Sundanese, is believed to be originated from West Java.  The authentic combro is using oncom, or fermented soybean leftovers, which is a common staple food in Indonesia. But since we don't have oncom in NYC, I use tempe, another Indonesian traditional ingredient, that you can easily find here in the USA. Since both are made of soybeans, they have similar taste and perfect for this recipe.

Berhubung oncom ngg ada di NYC (sampai sekarang belum ketemu yang jual oncom di sini hehe), jadi isi combronya kita ganti dengan tempe ya. Rasanya enak jugaaa kok :).

Here are the ingredients:

Cassava or yucca - 2 big ones, grated

Tempe - 1 package, beaten or cut into small cubes

Chilies - 2 or 3, depending how spicy you want it to be, if desired

Onion - medium 1, thinly sliced

Shallot - 1,  thinly sliced

Garlic - 2, crushed

Vegetable oil for frying

Salt, sugar and pepper - as desired
Coriander powder - if desired

Bahan-bahan yang dibutuhkan tidak banyak kok, hanya singkong, oncom atau tempe sebagai pengganti, bawang merah, bawang putih, cabe, garam, gula dan lada untuk membumbui. Plus minyak goreng untuk menggoreng.

How to cook:

First, we get the filling ready. Put the thinly sliced onion and shallots plus crushed garlic on a hot skillet, cook them until fragrance and put the chilies and tempe then saute it. Put it aside and let it cool.

In a mixing bowl, put the grated yucca or cassava, salt, pepper, a bit of sugar and coriander powder (if you like) and mix them well. Then get a spoonful of the mixture, flatten it in your hand, put a teasponful of filling then cover it with the mixture and shape it oval or as desired. then the last thing to do is deep fry it until golden brown. And Combro is ready :). Feel free to eat it with fresh chili or hot sauce if you like.

Memasaknya juga super gampang.
Pertama kita siapkan dulu isinya. Tumis bawang merah, bawang putih dan cabe hinga matang dan wangi, campur tempe dan jangan lupa bewi garam, sedikit gula, lada dan bubuk ketumbar kalau suka. Saya suka bangeeet dengan ketumbar karena wanginya khas :). Setelah isi jadi, tiang siapkan adonan singkong yang telah diparut dan juga diberi sedikit garam. Bentuk oval dengan tempe atau oncom di tengahnya dan rapikan bentuknya. Lalu tinggal digoreng deeeh :). Dan combro hangat siap dinikmati, apalagi jika ditemani cabe rawit segar dan teh hangat. Aaah bahagiaaa judulnya.

Dan kalau melirik jam dinding, proses membuatnya juga cepat kok. Less than 1 hour, ngga sampai satu jam. Oke kan :)

Wintery January

Welcome, January...

The very first day of the new 2016 and winter has surely arrived.

We don't do much today, except heading to the mosque for Friday prayer and stop for a while at Astoria Park. Obi et Bo really want to play in the park but it's just to cold. We only manage a brief walk before finally coming back to our car. 37 Degree F feels much colder with a strong wind today. And the sky is grey.

It all settles then... Movie marathon with bowls of hot meat balls soup will be our little family party in this beginning of 2016.

It's a wrap...

Well, this is it..

To a fabulous 2016 :)

2015 is about to kiss us goodbye.

We are still counting down here in NYC by the time I write it :).

How times flies and I haven't even enough time to contemplate of what 2015 has presented. But for sure I am feeling super blessed all year long :).

And no.. This is not my end-of-the-year note, just a little scribble on our last day of the year. But for sure I will summarize my amazing 2015.. If time and my kids allow :).

I still have to go to work and start the day quite normally.
Except for the special heart-shaped pancakes specially ordered by my dearest Obi. 
After a quick morning happy-family moment, off I go to my subway stop.

I purposely made a stop at Times Square, the intersection of the world, on the way to the office :). And I have to say this particular spot is already packed with people even in the morning. Later at 3, One Times Square will be closed and only open to those having the special ticket. Starting from $129 for general admission only (mind you, just the entry ticket :p, not yet the food etc), I guess I will pass that. I stop calculating if it is for the 4 of us. Besides, the weather won't be that friendly, at least for me 35-degree-C-all-year-long-Indonesian-body :). So, I am happy to make this brief stop before the real count down begin. And cloudy Times Square is quite a view.

The last day of 2015...

NYC 

Well, my brief stroll in this last day of 2015 is quite refreshing, I have to admit. 

I have been feeling so overwhelmed with works lately so anything out of my routines will always be welcomed. As I look up to the sky, I can't help but smiling.

Somehow I know deep down inside, 2016 will bring another round of happiness, joy, hope as well as more surprises. 

Now, it's a wrap and whatever life brings us, let's embrace it ...

My colorful wardrobe

"Maaaaaa...

Where are we going to put all these clothes?"

Jerit Bo yang sedang heboh membantu saya membereskan lemari pakaian. Pusing juga memang melihat tumpukan pakaian, kain dan entah apalagi yang sudah malang melintang di atas lantai. Sementara di kamar anak-anak, Rudi, my hubby, sudah asyik memasukkan pakaian musim panas kami ke dalam koper dan kotak. Winter cleaning is here :).

Libur panjang yang lalu kami memang tidak pergi ke tempat yang jauh-jauh seperti biasanya karena banyak acara dan undangan dari teman-teman kantor maupun teman-teman Bo et Obi. Mumpung di rumah, saya pun memanfaatkan waktu untuk beberes. Sudah lama memang ingin membereskan lemari pakaian yang mungkin kalau bisa teriak sudah jejeritan protes karena penuh dan amburadul. Lucunya, lemari pakaian anak-anak justru rapi karena Mama Bo et Obi suka bawel kalau melihat pakaian mereka bertebaran. 

Sudah menjadi kebiasaan saya untuk beberes lemari ketika musim dan cuaca berganti. Ya, ngga sering-sering banget sih, biasanya setiap perpindahan dari musim dingin ke musim semi dan dari musim gugur ke musim dingin. Karena perbedaan cuaca yang lumayan ekstrim, mau tidak mau pakaian pun harus disesuaikan juga. Belum lagi musim sale hehehe.. Yang seringkali membuat kita gelap mata dan lupa diri membeli baju lagi. Bukannya apa-apa..secara lemari hanya segitu-gitunya. Kita punya 4 built-in wardrobe yang idealnya cukup  untuk kami berempat. Tapi ternyata tidak :). Apalagi musim dingin akan segera tiba. Otomatis baju-baju tebal, jaket, sweater dan teman-temannya yang menghabiskan tempat di lemari harus dikeluarkan.

But you know what happened?

As usual, I become distracted :p. 

This is exactly what happen when you just love to see all those colorful wardrobe:). Instead of sorting out my summer and winter clothes, I just keep all my colorful dresses, no matter how thin they are, and color code them :p.  Itu pun tidak selesai karena kemudian saya malah asyik menyusun koleksi kain saya dari berbagai penjuru Nusantara. Apalagi saya punya tempat khusus untuk memajang mereka. Liat kain Tapis, pasang kain tapis. Ketemu Tais ganti Tais, begitu pula saat tenun Lombok dan kain Brongsong yang kebetulan warnanya ungu, warna favorit saya sedunia. Akhirnya... Waktu banyak berlalu karena saya asyik mengatur kain-kain cantik ini.

Yang kacaunya lagi, saya malah asyik mencoba-coba lagi aneka baju dan jaket yang memang sudah menumpuk di lemari hahahaha...Bagaimana bisa bereees kalau beginiii :). Salah satu yang sedang jadi favorit saya adalah jaket hitam dengan aksen Endek Bali warna ungu kesayangan saya. Istimewanya, jaket ini buatan teman saya sendiri, Mba Waya Komala yang memang jago menjahit. Bayangkan, dengan bermodalkan gambar sekenanya dan ukuran baju yang dikirim dari jarak jauh, plus kain Endek bali yang khusus diterbangkan langsung dari Bali, kurang dari satu bulan jaket cantik ini sudah tiba di NYC. pas dengan musim gugur yang saat itu baru mulai.

Satu lagi, jaket tenun Lombok buatan mba Waya yang perjalanannya lebih dahsyat lagi sampai ke tangan saya. Tau ngga kenapa? Karena jaket ini dibuat mba Waya di Jakarta, dikirim ke kantor saya di Jakarta, lalu dibawa teman yang tugas ke Jenewa dan saya pun 'menjemput' jaket cantik ini di Jenewa saat sedang bertugas ke sana beberapa waktu yang lalu. Perjalanan panjang yang sukses membuat saya langsung memakai jaket cantik ini saat ada UN Bazaar di Palais des Nations, Geneve :).

Bukan itu saja, Mba Waya juga sudah banyak membantu saya dengan ketrampilannya menjahit ketika saya membuat GA #finishthefight. Buat mereka yang mendapat pouch cantik pink ribbon dengan motif kain Endek bali, itu  hasil karya tangan dingin Mba Waya lhoooo.

Dan satu lagi (judulnya ngg abis-abiiis deh kalau ngomongin mba Waya sayaaang :)). 

Miss Rendang.

Iya Miss Rendang  Pake bold et underline plus warna ungu hehehee.

Duuuuh...jadi kangen dengan rendang homemade buatan mba cantik yang satu ini. Testimoni saya bahwakan saya tuliiiis di blog ini dan  Miss Rendang memang nendaaang :). Can't wait to try another round of hot steamed rice with this special rendang with a taste of home.

Cobaaa... Dari urusan beberes baju, kita jadi ngomongin rendang kan hehehe. 
It shows you how easily distracted I am :). But looking at my colorful wardrobe is surely a relaxing intermezzo amidst my colder days. I guess that's the reason why I keep adding my collections no matter how stuffy my wardrobe is :).

So, at the end of the day, I got two big bags of unused clothes that will certainly go to the clothing drive. All good for my closet and my gawangan is beautifully adorned with my favorite traditional fabrics from home. Tidying up my closet appears to be great therapy for me. It's so soothing  and relaxing:). Thank you, my colorful wardrobe :)
