Mama, I Can Read Now

Dr. Seuss' ABC...

My daughter, Obi, is now at kindergarten. Fully enjoying her class and activities at school, one of her favorite now is learning how to read.

Yup, it's probably one of the biggest challenges the kids are facing while they are at kindergarten and ready to proceed to the higher level. And learning how to read is on top of the list. Everyday, Obi has a book baggie, consists of at least 6 books which have been adjusted to her level. She is in level C now.

Obi's book for this week...

Well, since Pre-K and even before that, Obi has been introduced to letter and numbers. We have followed the recommended steps from her school and try to engage Obi with more and more books to read.

We started with something simple, like the ABC songs and Dr. Seuss' ABC. Singing alphabets and using flashcards, drawing letters and find related words starting with those letters. And not to mention 'I spy with my own eyes' or New Yorkpoly games.  Obi loves it :).

Sometimes, Obi chooses other books which are more complicated for her. Then we read the book to her, sometimes with the help of abang Bo. We had so much fun exploring the adventurous life of Laura Ingals Wilder, or the whymsical world of Roald Dahl in the coolest chocolate factory ever. Or singing sweetly all the nursery rhymes we can find in the book or jumping around with Dr. Seuss' colorful words. So much fun...

And now, at the kindergarten, they also have these reading tools at school. Some fun games and terms to use while they learn how to read.
You wanna know what they are?
- Eagle Eye - look at the picture and use the beginning letter
- Lips the fish - get your mouth ready, say the first sound
- Strechy snake - slowly s-t-r-e-t-c-h each letter sound
- Chunky Monkey - look for 'chunk' you know (like th, sh, ch, er, ing)
- Pointy Pig - point to each word as you read
- Trying Lion - try to reread the sentence. Think "what makes sense?'
- Pattern peacock - look for the pattern
- Careful Caterpillar - carefully read all the parts or the world
- Flippy Dolphin - try changing the vowel sound. Flip the sound and short vowel sound.
- Skippy Frog - skip the tricky word and read to the end. Go back and try it again
- Asking Alligator - ask for help.

The reading tools
Interesting, right? If you want to know more, let's take a look at these photos :).
Besides the reading tools, Obi also has sight words. Words that they have to know and remember. Usually start with simple words like "I, you, he, and." Then it will get harder and longer. This strategy really works well for Obi indeed.

More reading tools..

Kalau teman-teman punya buku anak-anak favoritkah? saya pun punya teman blogger baru yang ternyata penulis buku anak yang aktif. Namanya Rani Yulianty. Main deh ke blognya, www.raniyulianty.com and you will find many interesting things about this multitalented mom.
Teman-teman kenal Rani?
Wanna know more about her?
Stick around then...karena saya pun baru mengenal Rani lewat arisan blog.
Seru yaaa.

To start with, satu hal yang saya kagumi dari Rani adalah buku-buku cerita anak yang Rani telah tulis. Ratusan buku cerita anak pernah ia tulis. Hebat ya.
Walaupun saya belum pernah membacanya, but the fact that she has published hundreds of bppks fro children means something. Maybe you need to write more about the books that you have before, Ran.

Bahkan berbagai tips terkait kesehatan dan kecantikan juga ada lho, something that I really like to read on my friends' blogs. berbagai review juga komplit, mulai dari film, produk-produk dan layanan, hingga makanan.

Saya menikmati sekali berbagai review Rani mengenai film Indonesia.

Well, ngga papa..keep sharing them, so people know how great Indonesian culinary is :).

Meskipun saat ini Rani sudah lebih aktif di bidang lain, namun Rani merupakan professional writer yang pastinya akan selalu memiliki passion untuk menulis buku anak-anak kembali.
So....Kita tunggu ya Rani buku berikutnya. And meanwhile, let's enjoy her blogs :).

Cheers
