Wonderful Wednesday with Oh My Heartsie Girl

As the holiday season reaches its peak, we have some special guests last week visiting from Geneve. My cousin, Yusuf, and his girl friend, visited us here in NYC and stayed for around 5 days. So last weekend, while we had a freezing but sunny day, we visited the Long Island City to take some snaps under the Pepsi Cola sign. I knooow.. you might think it's very cheezy but it's a famous landmark for sure.

After our lunch at the Indonesian restaurant in Elmhurst, we continued our journey by making a brief stop at the Flushing Meadows :). We also passed the Citi Field and the stadium for the US Open, Arthur Ashe Stadium. As Yusuf is a a pro tennis player, he was so excited to see this place. He even said that watching US Open is on his bucket list. So for sure he will be back here again next time :).

It was a short visit but it's always good to meet any members of your family. Especially since the holiday season is here.

Pinky Flamingos at the Bronx Zoo

Flamingo...

Anybody here loves this pink and cute long neck wading bird?

I do..

Saya sukaaa banget dengan burung anggun berleher jenjang yang berwarna merah muda ini. Sepertinya kakinya yang panjang dan leher jenjangnya layak membuat flamingo menjadi bintangnya burung air yang selalu menarik perhatian semua orang. To me flamingo is like the bird princess. Paling tidak buat saya :)

Sudah pernah melihat flamingo dari dekat?

When we went down to Miami, we were planning to see the flamingos. They are pretty famous around the area and there is one specific place where you can go to see them. But we didn't have enough time and we had to choose whether we were going to see the flamingos or go snorkeling at the Key Largo. We chose the later one.

So, we missed the real flamingos there but I managed to grab some pinky flamingo souvenirs from Miami's South Beach :). Then, I also get some hot pot holders and brick-a-brack with pink flamingos adoring it. Super cute indeed.

But still, rasanya belum afdol kalau belum melihat burung yang super cute ini langsung. Saya masih penasaran bangeeet, walaupun tau kalau mau melihat flamingo pasti di kebun binatang dan dari jauh. Well, that should do :). Dan di awal musim gugur yang lalu, kami menyempatkan diri main ke Bronx Zoo. 

Bronx Zoo is certainly one famous spot people   love to check out while in NYC. Zoo is always for the kids as well as adults, so we won't miss it. As you know, NYC has several zoos, including one in Central Park and Queens. But Bronx Zoo is rather special because we have more animals here. So a lot to see and learn at the same time here.

Karena Bapak Udi asyik mencoba downhill bike di New Jersey, kami bertiga berangkat ke Bronx Zoo dengan menggunakan subway yang disambung dengan Uber taxi supaya jalannya tidak terlalu jauh hehehe. Walaupun sudah menggunakan sepatu jalan yang oke, tapi kala itu cuaca lumayan panas. Daripada Bo et Obi sebelum sampai di kebun binatangnya, akhirnya kami duduk manis di taksi yang membawa kami langsung ke gerbang kebun binatang ini.Antri sebentar (dan mama dapat tiket gratis thanks to NYC ID ;)), kami pun langsung menikmati Bronx Zoo dan para penghuninya. Saya juga janjian dengan tante Mpok, teman kerja yang sudah seperti kakak sendiri dan juga tante favoritnya anak-anak.

And Bronx Zoo is huge indeed. It's like entering a big woods and some part of it, especially for the gorillas, looks like a jungle. They have many attractions as well and you need extra tickets to see some of those certain animals. But even the regular ticket allows you to see so many great animals. 

We saw the camels, bears (different kind of them :)), lions, tigers and many kinds of birds. We also saw many types of snakes, lizards and the likes in the special cages. And besides these animal exhibits, you can also enjoy the carousel, 4D-theater and many more with extra ticket.

Banyak sekali hewan-hewan yang kami lihat di kandang mereka yang luas. Mulai dari beruang kutub yang senang bermalas-malasan di kandangnya yang adem dan dikeliling kolam air ataupun beruang madu yang besaaaar banget tapi lucuu dan cudly. Juga harimau, singa dan macan yang ternyata memang besar.

Bahkan kami sempat melihat dari dekat program enrichmant untuk salah satu harimau yang ada di sana. Jadi 2 orang pawang memanggil satu harimau muda (yang besarnya minta ampuuun :)) sampai ke batas terdekat pagar pengaman. Kemudian kami melihat latihan singkat ketangkasan harimau tersebut. Anak-anak happy banget melihatnya, sementara saya ngeri-ngeti sedap karena membayangkan kalau harimau itu iseng loncat keluar pagar >_<. But of course it was just my imagination :).

But as I said earlier, one of the main reasons we visited this zoo is because Obi and I would like to see the flamingos. We are indeed smithen with its cute pinky feathers as well as its long neck and legs.

Kolam tempat flamingo di kebun binatang ini terletak di dekat cafe dan toko souvenir. Dari kejauhan pun kami sudah mendengar suara khas kumpulan flamingo sehingga mudah mencarinya.

Such a cute scene..pinky birds flocking together :). Some of them were intertwining their necks. Too bad I only use my smartphone for photos so it wasn't that detailed and close.

Dan karena Bronx Zoo memang luaaas sekali, masih banyak exhibits yang belum sempat kami datangi, seperti jerapah, salah satu hewan kesayangan Obi, dan taman kupu-kupu. So, for sure we will come back for more :).

By the way, as I definitely fall in love with this cute birds, I have found a lovely flamingo skirt as well :). Setelah melihat flamingo di sana sini, entah karena sudah jodoh mungkin ya, saya pun menemukan rok lucu banget dengan motif 2 burung flamingo. Satu putih, satu pink. Asliiii lucuuu :). Lucky me.

Speaking of flamingo, do you know that this bird only lay one egg each and every year? Only one. Nothing more. Jadi, kalau telur yang ditetaskan flamingo dalam 1 tahun itu rusak atau tidak menetas, maka harus tunggu 1 tahun ke depan untuk telur yang baru. Berbeda dengan burung biasa yang kayaknya bertelur jauh lebih banyak yaaaa setiap tahunnya. Mungkin kalau burung cantik memang agak susah lahirnya :).

A leisure walk at Untermyer Park and Garden, Yonkers

One of our favorite family get-together here in NY is going outdoor whenever we can. 

As I have previously posted in before winter comes, we were enjoying the last weeks of warm weather around the Big Apple and the surrounding areas. Mind you, winter is just around the corner and before we choose to curl up in our sofas holding a cup of hot chocolate or a bowl of bakso (aaaah, ngebayanginnya aja udah enaaak :)), I make sure that we go out and enjoy the sun :).

And again, let me introduce you to Untermyer Park and Garden.

Beautifully situated at the bank of Hudson River, Yonkers, this park is a hidden gem. 

When we were there, there were not many visitors although the day was warm. 

Entah kenapa, kami selalu mencoba memanfaatkan waktu ketika hari cerah untuk pergi keluar kota. Padahal boleh dibilang banyak tempat-tempat seru di  New York City yang belum kami jelajahi. Deretan museum dan taman di tengah kota menanti untuk disambangi. Belum lagi godaan sale yang ampuuuun membahayakan dompet dan lemari hehe.

Tapi saat mendiami suatu negara, saya punya prinsip untuk mendatangi tempat yang jauh-jauh dulu, supaya yang dekat-dekat dan gampang dicapai dengan kendaraan umum bisa kita simpan untuk hari-hari yang dingin atau saat kita tidak punya begitu banyak waktu tersisa. Teman-teman punya prinsip yang samakah?

That's why beberapa waktu yang lalu, saat cuaca cerah, kami memilih mengunjungi Yonkers, satu kota yang tidak jauh dari NYC tapi kalau melihat beberapa referensi di laman traveling, sepertinya asyik juga untuk dikunjungi. And the day was warm indeed, in a way that it was more than 10 degree Celcius, karenanya kami berempat pun masih menggunakan jaket yang cukup membantu menahan angin.

And we are right! Hanya dengan menempuh perjalanan 45 menit, kami tiba di Untermyer Park and Garden, tujuan utama kami ke Yonkers kali ini.

Serasa musing semi..masih banyak warna-warni :)

Adalah Samuel  Untermyers, seorang pengusaha yang juga horticulturist yang bercita-cita merealisasikan Garden of Eden, atau taman firdaus. Bersama sang istri, Minnie Untermyer, mereka mencoba mengadaptasi konsep tersebut dengan membuat taman yang dihiasi 4 aliran air dan elemen surga lainnya. Di tanah miliknya di tepi sungai Hudson, dibangunlah taman Untermyer yang tengah kami kunjungi. Tidak hanya penataan tamannya yang istimewa karena bergaya campuran Indo-Persia dan Yunani kuno, namun juga pilihan tanamannya yang dilakukan secara selektif.

This Park has several parts, including the Walled garden, the Vista,  Temple of Love, the Rock Garden, the Color garden and the Sundial Garden.

We only managed to see 4 of them, minus the Color Garden and the Sundial Garden.

Salah satu bagian yang paling cantik menurut saya adalah the Walled Garden, atau taman yang terletak di dalam tembok khusus.

Mulai dari saat pertama kita masuk ke dalam kompleks taman ini, mata sudah dimanjakan dengan pepohonan rindang dan barisan bunga cantik di tepi kolam yang terbagi ke empat jurusan mata angin. Ada kesan misterius yapi mengundang kita untuk masuk lebih jauh ke dalamnya. Bahkan dengan kolam air yang saat itu tengah kering (karena konservasi air, kolam hanya diairi di musim semi dan musim panas), kami masih menikmati indahnya taman ini.

Di sisi kiri taman, terdapat kuil Yunani yang khas dengan tiang-tiang besarnya. 

Dengan mosaik keramik khas Yunani, di bagian bawah kuil ini terdapat kolam besar yang juga dihiasi dengan mosaik antik.

Right in the middle, you will see the famous sphinxes on top of the marble columns with the amphitheater right in front of it. Just marvelous...

Not only me, but also Bo et Obi.

This Indo-Persian and ancient Greek-inspired park has more. Right next to the amphitheater, we will be awed by the Vista. Bagaimana tidak, tangga menurun yang dibuat dengan meniru model Vila D"Este yang terkenal di Danau Como, Milan, Itali. Kami yang sempat mengunjungi Danau Como di tahun 2008 serasa dejavu, dengan Sungai Hudson sebagai muara indahnya alam ciptaan-Nya.

We were then heading to the Temple of Love :) Aren't you intrigued with the name? And the classic wrought iron dome over the elegant four-column gazebo just gives you the romantic ambience instantly.

And with breathtaking view seen from this upper platform, it really deserved its loving name.

So, that's our little adventure in Untermyer Garden and Park. Really a good intermezzo amidst our day-to-day trip in the concrete jungle of New York City. And a perfect spot for photo session as well :).

My Birthday Boys

Yuuup.. It's another round of happy, blessful birthday for my petite family.

This time, it's my son's, Bo :)

He is officially 9 today.

Time does fly when it comes to birthdays and watching your kids grow. 

Witnessing all those profound changes taking places, I guess, like many other mothers, Bo will always be my baby boy. He might be growing big and tall but deep down inside, I feel like holding him all the time and tousling his hair :)

Don't blame me if I keep looking at all those pictures and see how he grows all these years.

Seperti baru kemarin, saya menelpon mama di Lampung minggu malam waktu Melbourne tanggal 17 Desember dan lapor kalau air ketuban sudah pecah dan sedang siap-siap ke rumah sakit. Berdua dengan Rudi, jauh dari orang tua dan keluarga besar, kami berdua bersiap menyambut babak baru dalam kehidupan kami. Menjadi orang tua.

Saya masih ingat kalau kita diantar teman ke Monash Medical Center, padahal saya (merasa) masih gagah karena memang walaupun ketuban pecah tapi belum ada kontraksi. 

Kalau ingat susternya bilang waktu itu, "Sudah.... Kamu pulang aja dulu, paling masih hari Selasa anak kamu lahir. Ini yang pertama kan?" serunya sambil menenangkan saya yang kebingungan karena sudah pecah ketuban tapi malah disuruh pulang :). Padahal koper dengan segala isinya, mulai dari baju dalam, baju ganti, dan segala perlengkapan bayi sudah siap sedia.

But long story short, that Monday afternoon, December 18, I held you in my arms for the first time.

Alhamdulillaaah..

Mama juga masih ingat suara lantang Bapak mengazanimu, Bo, dan serunya kami berdua memandikanmu untuk yang pertama kalinya.

Fit as a fiddle and growing strong. And happy, too :).

Bujang mama yang tidak pernah lupa peluk dan cium pipi mamanya setiap mau tidur. Yang rajin telpon mama hanya untuk make sure mamanya segera pulang ke rumah. Yang semangat ambil telur,mentega dan nasi lalu masak nasi goreng bareng mamanya. Yang penuh semangat menggoes sepeda bareng Bapak meskipun cuaca dingin dan berangin. Dan penuh gelak tawa bercanda seru dengan Obi sampai capek atau berantem :).

Those precious moments we have with you are the continued blessings from the Almighty and we are forever grateful for that.

I might sound silly but the last couple of years have been quite rough for me and my family. And standing here, healthy and happy, is certainly something I am grateful for. Always.

There are so many simple things jn life that we sometimes overlooked but whenever you have time, embrace life.

The season of joy :) at 

What a festive month! 

Well, whenever you go here in NYC, burst of red, green, silver and gold are popping up here and there. Blinking lights from trees and windows, piles of glittery colorful gift boxes, and tons of chocolates, candi canes and cookies are such a feast to my eyes.

And although we don't celebrate Christmas, but we do love to see the joyful spirit everywhere. Besides, our neighbors and the owner of the house we've been renting so far always spare their time and give us gifts although we said that we're not celebrating it. So, sharing and caring are indeed the values that we hold dear regardless of your religions or faith.

Aaand.. I got to admit that I really enjoy the sale. 
Big, big sales almost on everything, almost everywhere.

Don't get me wrong.. 

Of course holiday is not about it. But if you can get an extra bonus of saving while you focus and share more attention to your families, friends and people around you, why not :). 

So, one of the 'rituals' that I do before going rampantly buying things is window shopping. Yuuup.. Window shopping! 
I guess I read it somewhere that window shopping is the favorite pastime of all New Yorkers.

Isn't it fun? Or you think it's dangerous as you might be tempted to get things that you don't actually need? To me, it works the other way around. I tend to be more determined in buying certain products (that I have been meaning to buy :)) after strolling around those department stores and shops. I know, it's time consuming and tiring as well, but whenever I have time, I will sneak to those places. It's a like a wonderful intermezzo for me as well.

And you know what.. Those department stores always come up with such a glamorous Christmas decorations. With some fine themes as well, including Peanuts the Movie :).

Nowadays, who wouldn't do it. 
I gotta say my hubby is even addicted to it as I keep catching him finishing one or two transactions from his smartphone or our computer.  
And even while doing online shopping, I have my window shopping ritual, too. Checking all those websites, clicking links from emails, fetching online coupons and more. 

There are times when I don't really have time to go and mostly stuck at the office, so I use my break to again sneak a peek to those webs :). Naughty me...

Sekarang siapa coba yang tidak pernah belanja online? Rasanya kebanyak dari kita malah sudah ketagihan ya, termasuk saya :). Taburan diskon khusus online, koleksi yang super duper lengkap dan menggiurkan, plus bonus rewards atau gratis ongkir suka membaut saya dan suami gelap mata hihihi..Berawal dari window shopping, berakhir dengan online rampaging :). Habis salah sendiri ngintip-ngintip tempat belanja, begitu kata suami. Kalau alasan klasik saya, kan mumpung diskon besaaar jadi sekalian nyetok. Dan kemudian pusing sendiri dengan tagihan kartu kredit karena nyetoknya berlangsung sepanjang tahun...

But  speaking about online shopping, don't miss the chance to check Zalora :). Its holiday season guide is alluring,  you'll definitely find something for everyone. And pssst...the sale button is always ON here:). No wonder my husband and I have prepared our lists these days. Sort of a list of gifts for ourselves, haha..
