Alriteee....welcome back to #MyItchyFeet@NYC (kayaknya ngg penting beneeer deh sambutan a la radio gini...though I miss my on-air session hiks #oot #molaaai...)

Kalau mau diturutin, setiap hari menyusuri jalan-jalan bising dan penuh 'kehidupan' di New York memang selalu menjanjikan banyak hal baru dan menarik untuk dilihat, dirasa, dinikmati. Apalagi buat orang baru seperti kami sekeluarga :).

Tapi susahnya, tidak semuanya cocok untuk Bo et Obi, dua malaikat kecil kami yang sedang lucu-lucunya ini. Ada yang keren, tapi admission ticketnya mahal ajaaah. Mau yang gratis, mostly jauh or aslinya ngga seheboh pamfletnya (pengalaman membuktikan :)..). 

So, we try our best to scrutinize our lists within the Manhattan area...dan pilihan pertama jatuh pada New York Publik Library. Yup...the famous NYPL :)

I fall in love since the first step :)

Kok since the first step? Iya...soalnya kalau mau masuk harus naik tangga cantik dulu ceritanya #baiklaah #abaikan...

Sejak sebelum datang ke sini, NYPL memang sudah berkali-kali di browse...sayangnya saat saya sering bolak balik untuk sidang di kota ini, selalu ngg ada waktu untuk mampir dan santai sejenak di perpustakaan keren ini. Then in one of my GA, mak Reni Judhanto shared more of this public library that instantly won my heart.

So here we were...on our first weekend in the Big Apple, making a rewarding stop to the Library. Yuup..the first one we visited is the Stephen A. Schwarzman building, occupying two blocks in the Fifth Avenue, between 40th and 42nd. 

I can't help but wonder...

What a journey it must be to have an established world-award-winning library like the one I was in.

Semuanya berawal dari cita-cita luhur Samuel J. Tilden, Gubernur New York yang ke-25 di tahun 1874 - 1876. Doi mewariskan 2.4 juta USD (yang setara waktu itu) untuk membangun perpustakaan di New York yang terbuka untuk umum. 

Waktu itu, sebenarnya NY sudah punya 2 perpustakaan, yaitu Perpustakaan Astor dan Lenox. Dan koleksinya juga luar biasa lhoo...rare collections such as the first Gutenbergs Bible yang dipakai di Dunia Baru, berbagai manuskrip penting, Americana dan dokumen langka lainnya. 




Penggunaan dokumen-dokumen dan koleksi yang ada di perpustakaan ini sebenarnya dapat digunakan oleh siapa saja, namun untuk masuk ke perpustakaan ini harus bayar tiket :).

So finally, dengan dana peninggalan Tilden, perpustakaan baru pun dibangun dan karena perpustakaan Astor dan Lenox mengalami kesulitan keuangan, maka koleksinya pun digabungkan menjadi satu dengan perpustakaan baru, yaitu New York Public Library. 

And there it was...gracefully erected in its prime location, NYPL displays a remarkable beaux-art design housing one million books already in its opening day in May 23, 1911, for the building in the 42nd st. Tidak tanggung-tanggung, ada 30.000 - 50.000 orang yang datang di hari pertama perpustakaan ini dibuka. Banyak bangeeet yah :)...Perhaps because it was for free :)

One more thing, NYPL juga menjadi role model untuk pengembangan sistem pelayanan perpustakaan yang efektif.  Kebayang dong mencari satu judul buku di antara jutaan koleksi yang ada. But they have created a system where 

Dan sekarang, NYPL terdiri dari empat perpustakaan riset utama dan 87 cabang yang tersebar di Manhattan, Bronx, dan Staten Island. Jadi total ada 91 perpustakaan utama dan lokal. Banyak ajaaah :).

For a book worm like myself, this is my home, my burrow, my nest. It's my paradise...where I can always warm my heart, fill my soul, and travel beyond my wildest imagination. To me, library is my paradise-on-earth :). And I am more than happy to share this lil piece of heaven with my loved ones, especially Bo et Obi.

Didirikan tahun 1895, kurang lebih 119 tahun yang lalu, NYPL telah menjadi bagian tak terpisahkan dari NY. Tak terbayang berapa banyak buku yang berisi informasi berharga, ilmu pengetahuan, ide brilian, inovasi, dan cerita, mulai dari yang sederhana hingga yang penuh inspirasi.

One thing I really admire here is that the NYPL has at least 88 neighboring libraries all over New York. It's such a great support as well as precious resources for those who need them. Up till now, annually, more than 18 million patrons have enjoyed services of NYPL, with the addition of one million users online. Woow...that's a huge number indeed...

Gedung favorit yang sering kami datangi adalah Stephen A. Schwarzman building yang ngetop dengan singanya itu :). 

Yang membuat saya dan anak-anak betah bolak-balik ke gedung ini adalah karena memang gedung ini adalah salah satu perpustakaan utama dengan koleksi luar biasa, plus Rose Reading Room yang luar biasa cantik dan Children's Center yang ada di sini...

Beneran deh, ini ke perpustakaan rasanya kayak jalan-jalan ke manaaaa gitu...seru sendiri hehehe...

#MyItchyFeet: let's explore...

It all began with these lovely car plates from all over the US standing nicely in one of the huge windows in the biggest department store in this city (if you know what I mean :) )... 

I know that US is big, so as Indonesia, but I just realize that it is that big :)

Then I feel the familiar tingling sensation on my feet...
Yuuup...They are itching again :)..surprise, surpriseee...

Of all those 50 states, I have only been to 4..New York, New Jersey, Virginia and  California..
Hmmm...only a few indeed...

But I certainly I hope I'll be able to see more of this country... wherever my feet and my path take me ..

#MyItchyFeet@NYC : Ke Central park yuuuk :)

Okaaay...ini mustinya udah lamaaa ditulis dan diupload di blogku iniiiih :D...
Secara it happened in the first week of our stay here in the city. But well, here I am now..dan dengan segala alasan yang entah sudah kali ke berapa disebutin terus, inilah diaaa...

Ke Central Park yuuuk..

Di tengah perjuangan melawan jetlag, kami memutuskan untuk melawannya dengan jalan-jalan. He'eh, jalan-jalan..biar capek, terus bobo enak sesuai jam di sini, et ngg jetlag lagiii deh :D. At least, that's the plan.

Setelah berunding ama anak-anak, kami pun melanjutkan jalan-jalan santai kami di minggu pertama here in NYC ke Central Park. Asyiiik.. paling demeeen main ke taman. 

Yup, the greeny park where you walk around freely and enjoy clean fresh air with the chirping sound of the bird sngs :)...

Alhamdulillah, cuaca lagi enak bangeeet..udah mulai hangat dan enak deh pokoknya..sampai ngg kerasa (eh, capek juga deeng) jalan kaki ke Central Park dari apartement sementara kami di 38th :). Coba, udah berapa blok tuuuh...dari 38th jalan ke 59th, naik ke 5th avenue pula hehehee...mana di sepanjang jalan banyaak ajaah 'godaannya', mulai dari the Rockefeller Center (inget sitcom ngetop 30 Rock?..di siniii nih tempatnya :) ) sampai lego store yang sukses mencuri hati Bo et Obi :).

But long story short, akhirnya kami pun tiba jugaa di Central Park...Yaaay...

Ini bukan kali pertama saya mampir ke sini, tapi pertama bareng suami dan anak-anak. jadi kebayaaang dong serunya. 

Frederick Law Olmsted dan Calvert Vaux adalah perancang taman tengah kota yang indah ini. Central Park sendiri dibangun di tahun 1850an, sepertinya  tepatnya tahun 1856, dan telah melewati beberapa kali masa 'kritis'. 

Beneran lho...Central Park yang sekarang menjadi kebanggaan dan contoh taman urban dengan landscape yang oke banget di tengah kota besar ini pernah menjadi sasaran vandalisme, tempat para kriminal kumpul dan penuh kubangan sampah! Ngga kebayang kan....secara sekarang kereeen banget. Tapi pada awal abad ke-20, saat the Great Depression and Perang Dunia pertama maupun kedua, taman kebanggaan masyarakat NY ini sempat menjadi public disgrace. Taman-taman kerennya dan jajaran pohon hijaunya pernah kering kerontang tak terurus, bangku-bangku tamannya rusak atau kotor, dan graffiti di mana-mana. Belum lagi para crooks alias penjahat-penjahat yang entah melakukan kegiatan ilegal di tempat ini. Dan sedihnya lagi, tumpukan sampah yang ada di mana-mana memperburuk keindahan taman jantung kota NY ini.

Tapi hebatnya, all those dark ages came to an end setelah ada inisiatif bersama para pecinta Central Park dan Pemerintah Kota NY. Di tahun 1970 bahkan pernah diadakan studi manajemen tentang taman keren ini, terutama mengenai manajemen pengelolaan yang efektif dan dilakukan oleh Prof. E.S. Savas dari School of Business . Hingga akhirnya, Central Park pun mulai dibenahi dengan serius di bawah tangan dingin Elizabeth "Betsy" Barlow yang diteruskan oleh Douglas Blonsky.

What I really admire here is that the community really stick together to save their beloved, much-needed park. The Central Park is not merely a green-lush park in the middle of  never-ending hustle and bustle of NYC, but it's part of the identity of this city. The Central Park Conservancy, the community based Board of Guardians of the Park, has successfully launched campaigns to raise funds in order to save and rebuild this beautiful park. 

Dan hasilnyaaaa... 

Taraaaaa...taman kota yang indah, lengkap dan menghibur :)...

Gimana ngg menghibur dan menjadi favorit banyak orang...Segala ada euuy :).

Dengan luas 843 acre atau setara dengan 3.4 km persegi yang dimulai dari 59th st sampai 110st, tidak salah kalau taman ini sampai dibagi menjadi 49 zone geografis dan penuh dengan pilihan buat para pengunjungnya.

Basically, Central Park is divided into two big parts, East side and West side, each offering different yet all-fabulous attraction.

Ada kebun binatang, danau buatan, carousel, playground and adventure playground, bronze statues, sculptures, figures, monuments, fountains and so many more....Let alone the landscapes, beautiful ones ...Bahkan di tengahnya ada Museum :). Yuup..the Metropolitan Museum on Art. Kalau liat di website dan petanya, at least there are 21 playgrounds there :). Plenty to choose from...starting from the ancient one with pyramids and obelisks to modern ones with adventure themes. Fun, rite...

For sure, one full day will never be enough. 

Dan karena kali pertama kami beramai-ramai ke sini jalan kaki dan lumayan cape, yang ada sampai di sini leyeh-leyeh et foto-foto deeeh...while strolling lazily around the park. 

Kami tiba di 59th East...so, we were welcomed by the remarkable statue of William Tecumseh Sherman yang merupakan hasil karya pematung ternama NY, Augustus St. Gaudens. Btw, Jenderal Sherman adalah jenderal ternama juga lho...Ngg tanggung-tanggung, Commanding General of the US Army di masa civil war. Psst, nama Tecumseh sendiri adalah pemberian ayah sang jenderal yang kagum berat dengan pemimpin suku asli Indian Amerika Shawnee.

Theeen...kami pun menyusuri sisi timur Taman yang sepertinya selalu penuh dengan pengunjung dari berbagai penjuru dunia maupun warga NY sendiri...

It's the weekend for everyone..

For sure, as we stroll along the path of the Park heading to the famous Central Park Zoo..

Too bad we arrived there rather late, only 1.5 hours before the Zoo closed..so we gonna do that on our next visit..

Then we found some climbing rock that the kids love...up we wend and we took pictures here as well :)..

Walaupun hanya bermodalkan di HP tea, it was fun to walk around and wander among trees :D...

We visited the lake...or as the map says, the pond :)..

Hiburan pun ngg kurang di sini karena banyak street artists yang keren ..like this beautiful and talented violist :D...

And definitely more to see....including Columbus ...

Memang baru sebagian kecil yang kita kelilingi di Cental Park, jadi  pasti balik lagi ke sini :). Ini baru sebagian di sisi timur aja udah kerasaaa hehehe...

Bo et Obi juga seneng bangeeet ...dan kita ketemu bebek et kura-kura imut pas di pond hihi :). Banyak tupai berlarian, pohon hijau nan rindang...

Dan selfie pun berebaran hehehehe...

Alhamdulillaaah... cemilan halal pun tersediaaa. Baik di dalam taman maupun di seputar pintu masuknya yang banyak itu :)

All in all...we were having sooo much fun and would love to go back again...Now, it's time to go homeee...with the subway :p..

Pramudita Darurazqi Frakarsa…famously known as Bo:).

Born 2950gr almost 8 years ago in Melbourne, now this soft-hearted Abang is a big boy  ♥. Best big brother to lil’ sister Obi, Bo is certainly growing up... fast..

I remember bringing him home from Monash Medical Center in 40-degree-C-afternoon in the the middle of Melbourne’s hottest summer. So tiny, yet full of energy and bubbly. That’s my boy :)

Never forget to hug and kiss maman’s cheeks whenever we parted, even for a short period of time, that’s Bo. I know things won't be that easy as we keep moving and hoping from one place to another, from one culture to another, from one school to another....But rest assure, mama and Bapak will always be by your side :).

And when I took this picture while we were strolling around in Brooklyn in one sunny Saturday afternoon, I was choked with happy tears realizing how blessed we have been so far.

Alhamdulillah, alhamdulillah, alhamdulillah…

Laura Ingalls Widers..

Does it ring a bell?

Buat temen-temen yang seusiaku, mungkin masih ingat serial TV jaman dulu kala waktu baru ada TVRI aja..

Judulnya Little House ..atau lengkapnya, Little House on the Prairie :). 

Yang mainnya Mellissa Gilbert as Laura Ingalls and Michael Landon as Pa Ingalls. Terus ada Nelly, teman Laura yang jahat karena suka iri dan pamer. Bener ngg sih? hehehe

Mereka hidupnya berpetualang dari satu tempat ke tempat lain di Amerika Serikat. Pioneering kalau kata orang sono, karena mereka bukan hanya sekedar berpetualang, tapi bertualang dan juga menjadi penduduk pertama dan membuka kota untuk pertama kalinya. 

Kebayang ngg sih...keliling negara naik kereta buggy (ehm itu namanya kereta buggy yah :) ) yang ditarik sepasang kuda, mengikuti jejak di padang rumput, membangun rumah sendiri dari kayu, lalu bekerja sama membangun jalur kereta dan mendirikan sekolah plus kota? Well, that's the story of Laura...

And many more for sure...karena Laura juga bercerita bagaimana ia dibesarkan oleh kedua orang tuanya. Belajar menjadi perempuan yang serba bisa..mulai dari memasak, menjahit, membersihkan rumah, berkebun, mengasuh adik, mengerjakan pekerjaan di ladang, memerah susu hingga membuat perabotan rumah sendiri namun tetap belajar, sekolah dan akhirnya menjadi guru...

Dengan rinci, Laura menceritakan hari-harinya sejak kecil hingga menikah dan memiliki satu orang anak dalam 9 seri bukunya yang kondang...

Teman-sudah ada yang baca?

Dulu, saya dapet warisan buku seri tulisan Laura Ingalls dalam bahasa Indonesia dari salah seorang wa saya. Lengkap, tebitan Balau Pustaka, diterjemahkan oleh pak Djoko Lelono. Precious collections, indeed.

Sayangnya, setelah saya pergi ke sana ke mari dan beberapa kali pindah, ternyata buku-buku koleksi saya ini tidak ada yang mengurus :(. Apalagi mama pun sempat pindah rumah saat saya sedang tidak berada di Indonesia. Walhasil, hanya tersisa 3 buku saja, Musim Dingin yang Panjang, Anak Petani, dan Kota Kecil di Padang Rumput. Coba...6 buku udah ilang ajaaah hiks..

Walhasil, once I arrived in NY, I directly try to find them again. And I made it...I found it! I found this website here where I can look and shop for those beautiful books..for cheap price! And here I am, buying 14 books in one go hehehe...Yaaay.. 

Truly highlight of the day.. Amidst my never-ending-reports at the office, my favorite books have finally arriveeed..And not just Laura lho :)

Laura Ingalls et Roald Dahl.. oh yeaaaah :D..

I just love them...their books have pretty much colored my younger days and taught me a lot :). Seriously, I learn about sisterhood, home cooking, traveling, friendship so many more from those pages. I guess I build my passion for travelling and exploring the world from Laura as well :D..And Roald? oh the world of possibilities....how imagination becomes borderless with his stories :). I will share that on the next posting I guess :).

Well, I really love reading and I found solace in reading good, nutritious books since kids. I 

certainly hope my kids will love reading too..

One lovely Sunday, we went to Astoria to sign the house contract. 

When we went out of the subway station, we found this cool mural :). 

Then you know exactly what follows....photo session :p
And I got Obi ready with her own style right on that mural :)). The mural itself was created under the theme of our ancestors. It might not be that clear seeing it from this side, but I'll post it completely later ",)...
