Yuuup.. every week, starting from the 8 of December, we have three birthdays of everyone in the house except me. Super fun indeed, although we don't really have a party to celebrate these sweet moments.

More like having intimate times with my loved ones, sharing laughters and love over good food at home.

Wintery Days at UNHQ

Winter is here!
In the last few days, NYC has been frozen with bone-chilled wind.
Well, nothing new of course, as winter has always been cladded with freezing, windy days and some minor storms last years.

While the temperature plunged down to sub zero, the sky, magnificently, remains clear and beautifully blue.

Including here near the UNHQ.

Although December is here, and holiday season as well as the end of the year is looming in, we still have meetings. In fact, many meetings.

So, it's good to be out of the building for a while.
Just to enjoy the beautiful sky up there.

Complete with its cute, puffy clouds.
Dotting the sky in its unique ways.

I still get myself lost in thoughts and prayers.
Whenever I look up and picture myself roaming freely just like the sky.
Feel the breeze and the warm comfort engulfing me before going back to where I stand and tighten my jacket :).

I will never stop sending prayers and hopes for all the problems we have in this world.
I wish those never ending discussions and negotiations within the UN's walls and rooms will continue to bring changes to the ground.
To those who need it.
To everyone of us.

Dearest my one and only Obi...

Mamaaaaaa.....

Mata cantik yang selalu berbinar terang itu menyapaku dengan hangat.
Sambil melendot manja dan bicara layaknya anak ABG (padahal  kamu sudah 6 tahun lho sayang :D), Obi memeluk mama dan bisik-bisik.."I love you, ma.. you know that, right?"

Aaah Obi.
My dearest daughter.

Surat cinta mama kali ini penuh dengan coretan manis dan senyum.
Anak perempuan mama sudah makin besar.
Makin penuh cerita, bawel ngga ketulungan.
Selalu penasaran dengan segala yang ada di sekitarnya, termasuk koleksi make-up mama yang mulai menghabiskan tempat di meja kamar :).
Tambah semangat menggambar all those incredible creatures on heels and colorful costumes :).
Plus eagerly acting as my sous-chef whenever we have something cooking at our Astoria kitchen.

9 months pregnant and super happy :)

Dulu, waktu kamu masih di perut mama, Bapak dengan girangnya memanggilmu Obi.
Jangan ditanya kenapa panggilnya Obi.
Some say it's related to Obi Wan Kenobi or even Obi Mesakh (please..).
Sampai sekarang kalau mama tanya kenapa Bapak masih senyum-senyum saja jawabnya (artinya Bapak juga bingung kali yaaaa :))
Padahal waktu nama sayang itu mulai dipakai, kita belum tau apakah kamu laki-laki atau perempuan.
But then Obi sounds perfect even for a girl.
And how you brought so much joy even when you still comfortably swam in my tummy.
If only you could see Abang Bo's excitement when he knew that he would have a baby sister!

Anak perempuan!
Lengkap sudah kebahagiaan mama, Bapak dan keluarga besar ketika tau kamu akan melengkapi keluarga Frakarsa.
Syukur dan senyum mama tidak hilang-hilang membayangkan akan mendapat 'partner-in-crime' seru untuk urusan perempuan. Jangan ditanya berapa banyak pakaian bayi dan aksesoris bayi perempuan yang mama beli! Most of them were purple (of course..) and I could say I have bought cute dresses for a 2-year-old girl even when you haven't been born! My bad :).

Dan Obi sudah ikut mama ke mana-mana sejak di perut, termasuk keliling Mesir dan naik onta saat usia kehamilan mama 7 bulan!
Bandel yaaaa.
Belum lagi endless meeting at the UN Office in Geneve! Kamu sejak di perut sudah dijejali substansi, nak :), karena mama berjibaku dengan deretan resolusi Dewan HAM yang semoga bisa membawa manfaat untuk banyak orang dan perbaikan kehidupan bagi siapa pun  yang membutuhkan. But don't worry..I took you to parties as well #guiltyascharged. Just to balance our crazy life!

7 month preggo and naik unta :)

And the plump, not-so-little baby girl, who was born in Meyrin, Geneve, Switzerland, safely landed in God's green earth.
Nadine Anja Frakarsa.
Lahir normar dengan berat 3.85 kg dan panjang 52cm.
Wuuuuh...lega rasanya mama waktu melahirkan kamu, apalagi dapat bonus epidural plus ngantuk berat saat disuruh ngeden hehehe. 
Percaya ngga...sehari sebelum melahirkan kamu, mama masih asyik ngantor. 
Sore pulang, malam masuk rumah sakit, diinduksi dan paginya, usai Bapak titipkan Abang Bo di tempat Nenek Nur, kamu pun lahir. 
Pengertian banget sih kamu, dek. Tau bahwa kita tengah berjuang berempat di negeri orang.
Dan tangismu pecah, di sela semilir angin sejuk dari puncak salju Gunung Jura di perbatasan Perancis dan Swiss. 

And what a colorful life we have afterwards.
Obi, a.k.a Nadine, benar-benar menjadi penyejuk jiwa mama, Bapak, Abang Bo et keluarga besar. Sejak kecil kamu sumeh. Selalu senyum, jaraaaang banget nyusahin.
Padahal sejak 2 bulan mama sudah bawa kamu ikutan sidang di UN.
Entah berapa malam kamu ikut nungguin mama di kantor sambil menikmati ASI.
Sejak mulai dengan MPASI, Obi pun mamamnya ngga pernah susah.
Alhamdulillah bangeeeet pokoknya!

And now, look at you!

Surely one of the sweetest gifts our family has. 
My little partner in all the good and tough times, who happily helps mama et Bapak cooking as well as sorting out the laundry. Who beautifully draws the Frakarsas' story and wholeheartedly tries to beat Abang Bo in minecraft .

Growing big and tall, you continue cheering up the whole family.
Even in the toughest time.
Pelukan hangat dan kecup manis di pipi mama yang terkadang sudah ngga sinkron saat pulang ke rumah selalu sukses membuat mama menghembuskan syukur yang tak terhingga kepada-Nya.
Ini nikmat-Nya yang luar biasa.
Ini indahnya hidup yang dikarunia-Nya.

And now, you're 6!
6 sweet years!

Di pagi yang cerah itu, Obi bangun dengan senyum manisnya dan mengingatkan kita semua kalau hari ini usianya genap 6 tahun (as she has done for the last 2 weeks :))
And pssst, sambil bersiap-siap sekolah, ada yang sudah bisik-bisik dengan mama tanya boleh dapat kado ngga :)?
Boleh bangeeet dong Obi, apalagi sekarang sale lagi ada di mana-mana, termasuk online shopping dengan segala kepraktisannya.

Indonesian Yellow Rice - Nasi kuning

Nasi kuning, anyone?

Hello, Everyone!

What a joyful month!

December is super special for ma petite famille. 
Remember when I said I have three birthdays and 1 anniversary this month? 
Yuuup...
Four precious moments to celebrate with my loved ones and I surely don't wanna miss the opportunity to make those special times 'special'. 
Including by preparing some special dishes :).  

I decided to republish this post, one of my favorite recipes for special times including holiday season like now,  as I would love to make sure everyone tries Nasi Kuning.

Di bulan Desember yang ceria, keluarga kecil kami memang dilimpahi banyak kebahagiaan dan nikmat yang harus senantiasa disyukuri. Walaupun tidak heboh dengan perayaan, tapi saya selalu mencoba menyiapkan makanan spesial untuk hari yang istimewa. Kali ini, saya coba membuat nasi kuning :).

In Indonesia, we have a tradition of preparing nasi tumpeng or cone-shaped rice made of Nasi Uduk or Nasi Kuning. Usually, it is garnished with so many additional yummy plates of fried chicken, potato fritters, fried eggs, fried noodles, beef floss, or even sambel goreng tempe, which recipe I have shared here before. But of course, it doesn't have to be that complete.

We recently have a welcoming dinner at the Mission for the UN Secretary-General Designate, H.E. Mr. Antonio Gutterres, with Nasi Kuning komplit as the main course.

Perhaps, you like to try something different this holiday season? It will definitely be perfect for your special day dinner as well.

So, are you ready to cook with me again?

some of the ingredients :)

Here are the ingredients:

Rice - 2 pounds 

Coconut milk - 3 cans or boxes 

Lemon grass - 4 pieces, cut and beaten

Dried bay leaves - 6 pieces or more, as desired  Turmeric powder - as needed
Garlic powder - as needed
Coriander powder - as needed
Chicken broth
Salt 

Bahan-bahannya standar dan mudah kaaan. 
Beras, santan, serai segar, daun salam, bubuk bawang putih, kunyit dan ketumbar (bumbu favorit saya nih :)), dan juga garam plus kaldu ayam. Nah, kaldu ayam ini modifikasi saya sendiri sih, supaya nasinya bisa lebih gurih walaupun tidak terlalu banyak santan. pas buat mereka yang mencoba mengurangi makanan berlemak tapi tetap menyukai makanan enak dan gurih #hmmsiapayaaa.

For garnish:

Eggs - beaten and fried
Green pepper - cut and shaped as desired
Tomatoes - cut and shaped as desired
Olives
Beef floss - you can easily buy the ready-to-eat package from Asian store
Fried onion - buy the packed on from Asian store, as well.

Untuk penghias nasi kuning kali ini, saya ambil yang praktis saja. Boleh kan :).
Ada telur dadar, abon, bawang goreng dan sayuran untuk hiasan. Prkatis hanyak telur daar saja yang perlu dimasak, yang lainnya beli hehehe :)

How to cook:

Clean the rice and put them in a big pan.  Add the coconut milk, chicken broth, turmeric, garlic and coriander powder as well as the salt, bay leaves and lemon grass. If the coconut milk and chicken broth appear to be inadequate, you can add water to make sure is not too dry. Mix it well, particularly the turmeric powder, and make sure it's evenly mixed and nicely turn the rice yellow. Slow cook it in low fire and occasionally stir it to avoid overcooking it. Once it's ready (all the liquid will be dried and the rice will be nicely damp and yellow), set it aside and prepare the steamer for the mixed rice. Steam it for approximately 20 minutes until the rice is well-cooked.

You can definitely use the rice cooker for this but I prefer preparing it separately like this for better result. 

Memasaknya gampang kan :). Tinggal memasukkan semua bahan yang dibutuhkan ke dalam panci besar, aduk hingga warna kuningnya merata  dan masak dengan api sedang. Saat santan dan air kaldu sudah hampir habis, lebih baik api dikecilkan, supaya bagian bawah tidak gosong. Jangan lupa sering-sering diaduk yaaa...supaya tidak gosong dan matangnya bisa merata. Selesai diaron (benar kan ya bahasanya diaron :)..kalau di keluarga kami, proses ini disebut mengaron. Hmmm..berarti kata dasarnya aron ya #abaikan :)), nasih ditanak dengan dandang terpisah yang sudah diisi air di bagian bawahnya. Masak hingga nasi tanak. Supaya tau sudah tanak atau belum, langsung dimakan saja :). Kalau ingin praktis memang bisa langsung menggunakan rice cooker. Tapi saya lebih suka dengan cara begini, supaya nasinya betul-betul tanak :).

For the garnish egg, beaten the eggs evenly and mix it with salt and garlic. Then fry it in a pan. In Indonesia we call it telur dadar. Usually, for nasi kuning or nasi uduk, we make the thin version of telur dadar, roll it and slice it thinly, like the one in my photo up there :).

Shape the rice in a plate and garnish it with eggs, beef floss, fried onion and veggies.
Feel free to create a lovely plate as desired.

Voilaaaa.. Your nasi kuning is ready now :).
