Siomay time :)

Indonesia is indeed a culinary heaven.
If you have tried Indonesian food, I think you will nod as well..

We are very proud of the richness of our authentice cuisines and delicacies :).

Come to Indonesia and you instantly spot many interesting and of course delicious, culinary destinations.

And todaaay..I feel the urge of eating SIOMAY :).
Have you tried Siomay before?

Siomay is the Indonesian steamed fish cake.

We usually eat it together with hard boiled egg, steamed potatoes and cabbages, spinkled with spicy peanut sauces and sweet soy sauce on top.
Supeeer yuuum :).
If you are alergic to peanuts, you can skip the spicy peanut sauce and still enjoy this delicacy by dipping it to chili and sweet soy sauce.

It might sound similar to shiumai that you can find in Chinese restaurant but Indonesian version is much more delicious. At least for me :)

And it's not that difficult to make.

So let's try it together..

Are you ready?

Here are the ingredients:

some of the ingredients..

For the siomay

-          White fish fillet, 1 lbs
-          Fresh shrimps, 1 lbs
-          1 medium shallot or red onion, or as you like
-          2 cloves Garlic,
-          Salt and pepper, as needed
-          2 spoonful of fish sauce, if you like and as needed
-         Flour and tapioca flour, 1 lbs, as needed (I usually use the ratio 70%              four -30% tapioca)
-          Scallion, finely chopped
-         Grated carrots, for garnish
-          2 Eggs, for mixing
-          Wonton skin, ready to use

If you like, you can also add the following:

-          Potatoes, steamed
-          Cabbage, briefly steamed
-          Hard-boiled eggs

Peanut sauce

-          peanut, roasted or fried
-          onion
-          garlic, crushed
-          chili if you like
-          brown or palm sugar
-          oil
-          salt

How to make it:

For the siomay, put the white fish fillet and fresh shrimps, together with the onion, and       garlic into the food processor and grind them all together. Once it's well mixed, add the salt and fish sauce, then add the flour and tapioca little by little to mix it well. Add the eggs and scallion and mix it well.

Once our siomay base or the fish paste is ready, take a spoonful of it and put it in the middle of the wonton skin and shape it like a mini cupcake. you can garnish it with grated carrots on top. Steam it for about 15 - 20 minutes until it is well cooked. You can check it with the toothpick to know whether it is ready or not.

For the peanut sauce, grind the peanut, onion, garlic, chili (if you like) and palm sugar. Once it's well mixed, add some water to turn it into sauce. Warm up the skillet, put the  crushed garlic and cook it well, then pour the sauce and slow cook until it's boiling a bit and look like a thick sauce.

Serve the siomay, some hard boiled eggs, potato and cabbage,  with peanut sauce on top.

If you can't take the peanut sauce, siomay is good to go as well without the sauce.

Hope you like it and enjoy :)

Tanjung Bastian Beach, Atambua...

My memory was thrown back to 2013 when I had the priviledge to cross the border of Indonesia and Timor-Leste.
Taking a tiring but beautifully rewarding road trip from Dili to several border crossing points across the line between the the two countries, I really enjoyed our 5-hour trip.

Along the way, my eyes were feasted with the endless beauty of the nature.
Raw...but mesmerizing...

on our way to Atambua, East Nusa Tenggara...
And oh so clear blue sky..

I just found more snapshots I got during my visit to this eastern part of my beautiful homeland, including this traditional hut in Atambua.

And as always, I am drawn to the beach most of the time.
At that time, we stopped at Tanjung Bastian beach.
As much as I was tempted to plunge myself to the cool water, we didnt't really have enough time to do so. So I just took pictures while others were sipping their coffee :).

To the majestic blue sky and the alluring turquoise sea....

me back in 2013 :)

Missing the breathtaking underwater world of Indonesia

Entah kenapa..
Beberapa hari ini saya merasa ada yang tidak pas.
Tidak enak.
Membuat gundah...

I just don't know why I feel a bit 'off' lately.

Well, it's normal though :).
Perhaps I'm just tired..

At least for me.

We wandered around New York Botanical Garden, Central Park, and Astoria Park to fully enjoy the breathtaking autumn in New York.

But back to the office, I still feel something is missing.
Terribly.

Yah, mungkin saya memang kurang piknik.
Sepertinya saya kangen tanah air.
Iya, saya kangen piknik di tanah air :).
Dan menyelam...hobi saya yang sudah lama absen dilakukan.

Looking at those breathtaking walls with its creatures..
Swimming along with turtles and school of fish..
Taking pictures here and there..
Taking underwater selfie again and again..

underwater selfie? why not :p....

Watching clown fish ..
Or just simply let my body float around in the depth of the sea..

Most of them where taken in Bunaken, Manado, North Sulawesi.

blue...

recognize this fish from Finding Nemo? :)
so close..so happy :)

Dan memang alam bawah laut Indonesia cantiiiik bangeeeet

isn't he cute :)

Diving in Indonesia is what I love.
And I sincerely hope I can try diving here at the US and the Carribean as well.
Gotta save some money to have those awesome holidays :)

What would you do if you're feeling a bit off?

WW: Tenun Karawo from Gorontalo

How I love wearing the traditional fabrics from my beloved country, Indonesia.
And I have to say I am blessed and extremely lucky to have my dearest friend, Agus Lahinta, sending this beautiful piece of Karawo dress proudly made by Rumah Saronde, Gorontalo.

Karawo is the traditional embroidery from Gorontalo, Sulawesi.
Meticulously handcrafted, it takes months to create one, particularly with its special patterns. Most of them are in the forms of flowers and geometric patterns of colors.
Let's take a closer look ..

I haven't seen the process of making it myself, but citing it from the website of the Provicial Government of Gorontalo, the making of  this piece of art requires slicing and pulling the threads from the yards before embroidering it back with desired patterns. Not that easly for sure but it turns out beautifully.

And I am proudly wearing it to the UN :)

Cheeers....

proudly holding my national flag :)

Get more information about Karawo from Rumah Saronde and feel free to see those colorful patterns on their Facebook page and Instagram @karawosaronde
