Culture Night at PS122, Astoria, Queens

And here comes the Culture Night at PS122, Astoria, Queens. .

welcome to the Indonesian table :)

It's the annual international gathering at Bo's  (and soon will be Obi's, too ;)) school here in PS122.  Well organized by the Parent-Teacher Association, or famously known as PTA, this event has been conducted for 10th times and what a fun night it was! Celebrating the  rich and diverse cultures of PS122, the culture night soiree surely attracts many.

It all started with the invitation sent to all parents in PS122 informing about this event as well as inviting to those who are interested to participate in the Culture Night by organizing a table, donating food and raffles prizes. The date planned was May 15 with May 29 as raincheck. By the time I saw that email, I immediately registered and planned to have Indonesian table there. Well, we don't have many Indonesians in that school but that doesn't stop me from joining it. Well even perhaps that's the reason why we have to join, so they know there are Indonesians as well in this international - setting public school. And it is indeed the first time that Indonesia joins the crowd. Yaaaaay...

the goody bag :)

So I decided to organize a table, bring some Indonesian food, and donate three goody bags filled with Indonesian handicrafts  and food products for the raffles.

The event started at 6.30. Parents and everyone were welcome. They only need to pay a $5 entry ticket where they would get a plate and cutlery. Raffles ticket is $2 each or $12 for 10. All the proceed will go to the school.

That Friday evening was a windy one, so we were getting ready slightly before the door was open. Obi and Bo were all wrapped in Lampungnese traditional attire while I decided to wear my fuschia kutu baru kebaya and purple-and-gold Songket Lampung. I know I'll be busy serving food but I just can't help wearing those colorful costumes we have :)

Lampungnese attire and Songket Palembang :)

Getting all our stuff ready, Bapak took us to the school and helped us with the preparation. We had all our colorful handicrafts to be displayed on the table as well as some mini souvenirs for those who come to our table, thanks to Tante Chichi :). Not to forget my wastra collection, to show how colorful Indonesia is :). We actually brought a special background with Komodo dragon picture on it, but the wind was so strong so we decided not to use it. So was my gawangan, as I was afraid the strong wind would break it.

Of course, food are the essential part of this display and I have my home-made nasi uduk or the typical Indonesian rice cooked the coconut milk. lemon grass and bay leaves, as well as Indonesian fried noodles. I have to admit I stayed up late cooking 3 batches of nasi uduk and mie goreng :). Luckily I got Udi staying with me watching stand up comedy :).
I have also ordered pastels and krokets from a friend. So, we were okay in food department as I have 7 trays of food :). Oyeaaaah...

As the door opened, the fun started...
Visitors were coming, roaming around deciding which food they wanted to taste and asked around about the countries.

Obi and I were so busy chatting and serving food for those coming to our table. Some knew Indonesia  already, some came there for vacation, some knew it from TVs. We have Bo's teachers coming and  the Principle as well as other teachers, too. We also met some Indonesian families as well...one just came less than a year ago, just like us, and one had been in the US since they were born :). Too bad I didn't take picture with all of the them.
After approximately an hour, most of our food were gone, only nasi uduk left :). Then we managed to sneak out and browse around ourselves before they cleaned the tables!

Well...most if the food were gone, but a we still enjoyed exploring the various display of cultures. Everyone got creative...not only displaying food but also wearing beautiful, traditional dresses with all those amazing accessories. Some, like us, also displayed some traditional handicrafts, fabrics, books and many interesting objects related to our beloved hometowns. We saw dolls, tea set, jewelries, heirlooms, traditional costumes, toys and many more.

We saw those from Spain, Italy, Afghanistan, Peru, India, Bangladesh, Albania, Poland, Finland, Haity, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Mexico, Morocco, Turkey, Egypt, Romania, and so many more. It was very fun indeed...

Heirloom from Albania..isn't it gorgeous...

They also had some performances in the middle of the yard. Too bad we watched them from a far, from our table hehehe...But we are determined to come back again next year! With more yummy food, more goodies and more fun :).

We went home feeling tired but with happy, full tummy :).
Thank you, PS122....see you next year :)

Have you joined similar event? Did you enjoy it? What did you like most... the food, the costumes, the crafts or else?

Food Festival at Obi's School

We just had Food Festival  at Obi's UPK.
It was an annual gathering of all the parents and the kids as well as the teachers at the UPK. And since we all are coming from different parts of the world, it was indeed a great opportunity to know more about our friends' cultures.
cheeers....

Lots of great food were served during that time. And from many parts of the world.
We have Bengali sweets, cheese puffs from Colombia, different types of biscuits, macaroni schootel, caramel pudding, vegetable samosa, Indonesia fried noodles and sooooo many more!

some of the food we had....one of the three tables filled with yummy food :)

Too bad I didn't really catch all the names of those glorious food :)
But you can imagine how fun it was!

It was breifly started by Ms. Linly's remarks welcoming everyone. Then we all sat in those tiny colorful chairs and started distributing food for everyone.
When us, the parents, arrived, the kids already got their beautiful plates filled with the food of their choices.

Big laughters were certainly heard here and there as we enjoyed the food and chitchat among teachers, kids, and parents.

Obi enjoying the chips, despite all the yummy food we had :)

We discussed a lot about the food being served. It was fun to discuss the traditional food, the way they were  cooked and how delicious they were. We had fun discussing about our childhood backhome as well. How I miss my home town :).

The kids were having fun, too. They ate a lot, chatted a lot and asked a lot about this and that. They certainly loved to have their parents around among friends :).

cheeers...Obi with Tatiana, Rowan, and Tina

One month before this gathering, parents were asked to fill the form, informing what we would bring and we needed to write down the ingredients as well to ensure those food were safe for the kids. We didn't need an allergy attack while enjoying this fun time...

who wants some moreee...
I decided to bring Indonesian fried noodles, garnished with carrots, sweet corns, green peas, and eggs. I was glad the kids loves it! I brought two big packs of it and all gone. Obi loved it and so did her friends :).

After enjoying our early lunch, the kids were having one game together and dancing to the music.

They asked the parents to join the dance, too!...

It was indeed a fun day for all of us...
And I love to see those happy faces at school!
Hope they will have more gathering like this soon :).

Open Trunk Show #4IndonesianDesigners in NYC #CoutureFashionWeek

What a busy week we have here...
It was the long weekend for the President's Day and we had New York Fashion Week as well during that time!

One of the shows that took place during the same time was Couture Fashion Week.
And we were so proud to have #4IndonesianDesigners coming and participating in that fabulous event! Those great designers were Dian Pelangi, Zaskia Sungkar, Barli Asmara and Asri Welas.

It was held in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, NYC, but I couldn't come because I was out of town with the kids....

Luckily, I managed to come to their Open Trunk Show. Wuhuuuu....

from the House of Asri Welas...

The Open Trunk Show was held in the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in NYC. And the Open Trunk means Open Trunk literally :)...as we saw some collections while they also at the same time opened the trunk and sold some of those collections. How cool is that :)...

the open trunk...literally :)
The show began at 2 pm but I was at the venue with Bo et Obi at 1 pm. Yup...1 hour earlier and it gave me enough time to take picture here and there and picked some of the merchandises I love :)

the room, before the guests arrived...
The theme of this show was from Lombok to New York. Three designers, namely Zaskia Sungkar, Barli Asmara and Dian Pelangi, or in short ZBD, had created fascinating designs using the colorful traditional fabrics from Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.

From Lombok with loveee....
Lombok has been widely famous for its intricate tenun or hand-woven cloth, featuring one-of-a-kind patterns and brilliant colors. It's always be my favorite, too! Produced with traditional looms, especially gedogon, those woven clothes will surely steal your attention :). Now you imagine when young and talented people like Dian, Barli and Zaski turn them into fashion masterpiece!

So, the journey of these 4 Indonesian Designers to New York has been a colorful one!

And, let's check out their corners during the Trunk Show as well as some sneak-peak behind the scene :).

Let's start with Asri Welas ...
Without further do, let me introduce you to some of the house of Asri Welas' collections..

Asri Welas' designs...elegant kebaya indeed...

And from Dian Pelangi Collection

Don't you just love the jacket :)

it's reeeeed...

The other two designers didn't really have more from their trunks :). Most of their collections were worn by the models and were ready to be shown.

So, before the show started, I managed to sneak up and take the liberty to take pictures
some of the models who were either getting ready for the show or simply waiting for the final touch :)

cheers....left is Zaskia Sungkar's design and right is Dian Pelangi Lombok collection...

the stunning red kebaya and red-and-gold-tapis from Asri Welas..sans the Siger, the headpiece :)

Okay...final touch for Barli Asmara's models :)

happy faces indeed L)
Then the show began...
It was briefly opened by the Consul General of Indonesia in NYC, Mr. Ghaffur Dharmaputra, followed by Sekar Jagad Dance, a traditional dance from Bali.

I was trying to secure my corner but it was just impossible...
We have so many photographers as well and audience wanted to take pictures, too.
So we saved our little corner with my sweet Obi sitting on the floor :).

We also have some more guests arriving when the show started...including some from the local fashion institute :). They look like models themselves ...

And here are some of the photos taken during the show...
