Tempe Bacem - Javanese Sweet Marinated Tempe

Have you tried tempe or tahu bacem before?

tempe bacem

In this lovely Father's Day as well as the blessed holy month of Ramadhan, allow me to share one of my hubby's favorite recipes.

Tempe Bacem or Javanese Sweet Marinated Tempe, if I may freely translate it :).

Those who have been to Indonesia, particularly to Java,  might be familiar with this famous dish from my country. Owing to its exquisite sweet and bold taste, tempe and tahu bacem are surely loved by most of us, Indonesians.

Remember tempe?

I have passionately shared about this vegan food. Made of fermented soybean, tempe has surely stolen the hearts of Indonesian. You will definitely find various dishes using tempe in Indonesia. But even abroad, whenever you have Indonesians, there will always be ones who produce and sell tempe. Including here in NYC. Some of the tempe being sold here are made in New Jersey or Philadelphia. Every week, we have our own schedule at the nearest Indonesian groceries stores in Elmhurst, Queens.

When we were in Melbourne, we have a steady suply of tempe as well, produced by some of the students there. In Geneve, we have a very nice and yummy tempe made in the Netherlands and somehow delivered to Geneve, Switzerland, every 2-3 months.

So, that's a little story about tempe and now let's try our simple recipe today.
Usually, we cook tempe together with tahu or tofu, and even chicken, using the same spices and marinating sauce. But this time, I skip the tofu (and the chicken) and only have tempe.

it can be yummy snack, too :)

Ingredients:
Tempe

Spices to be ground:
Palm sugar
Coriander
Shallot or red onion, thinly sliced
Salt
Kemiri or candle nut
Bay leaves - set it aside
Galangal - pressed

How to cook:

There are several steps to go through while cooking tempe bacem.
First, we prepare the spices. As always, I enjoy grinding it manually using my traditional mortar and pestle that I brought from home :). It was actually my mom's and I cherish it dearly. Using it is like cooking in my mom's kitchen, so warm and cozy.
So..back to the cooking.
let's grind it..
Once the spices are all ground, then we marinate and cook tempe together with all the spices. Put them all in a pot, add a half glass of water (or more if deem necessary) and bring to boil until all the spices are well absorbed by tempe. Some use coconut water to add the extra bold flavor but to me, water is enough.

Use low heat to avoid overcooking or burning the tempe because the marinate sauce is sweet. To have a bolder taste, I usually add sweet soy sauce. My favorite Indonesian brand is Bango and luckily, we can easily find it here in NYC. Cook it until the water is dried and the spices are well mixed.

And finally, once tempe is well cooked and looks brownish from the spices, we can deep fry it or bake it to make it crunchy. If you don't fancy frying it, you can eat it as it is, because it is basically well-cooked already.
Eat it together with a bowl of steamed rice and some fresh chili, if you like :).
Hope you enjoy it and till next recipe.

Beyonce - The World Formation Tour

It was 5.15 PM.
And the rain just stopped.
I was just finishing my Ashr prayer when the alarm in phone displayed a reminder.

Ticket: Beyonce - the Formation World Tour

It's Beyonce :)

Yes, it was the D-day.
My time to meet the Queen B.
One of the divas I truly admire for her impeccable talents, attitudes and good deeds. Her latest works with Global Citizens is admirable as well. She is really one o

I remembered the drama of buying this ticket back in the January 2016. How excited we were at that time! Making sure we got the best spot and most affordable one. We missed the presale ones because obviously I didn't have the platinum card required. So, finally, we had the right wing on section 121, row 19. You know how much it costed us? $306.24 per person. I know it's a lot but well.. It's Beyonce >_<, what are you expecting :). Even with that, tickets were sold out.

our ticket :)

So, it was the three of us heading to Citi Field, where the concert was held.
New York City was wet and cold that day! It was raining cats and dogs since the morning, and windy plus coldy, but the rain miraculously stopped at 5 PM. We were thinking of taking Uber but coming out of the office, the traffic was crazily unbearable as, guess what, the President of the US decided to pay a visit to the UN at the very same day.

And you know the protocol..

They just had to close some parts of the 1st and 2nd Avenue, causing traffic block here and there. So decided to take the subway instead, taking line 7 all the way to Met Life/Citi Field, the venue of the concert. It was very convenient and in less than an hour. We were right on the spot.

arriving at the Citi Field

After lining up for the security check, showing the ticket and buying some food for breakfasting, we found our seat and waited for the show.

my seat :)

The stadium was filling up fast indeed.

Obviously we had enough time to take pictures here and there.

cheers..

At around 7.30, we had DJ Khaled, as the opening act. He's cool!
Although frankly I don't know much about him hehehe. But my friend Anggie said that he's one of the most famous persons in Snapchat. So if you wanna know more about him, go check it out in Snapchat. And don't forget to add me, indahnuria #eeeh :).

Queen B..

Then finalement, at around 9.30 I guess, Queen B was finally coming.
And how cool the concert was!
The stage, the costumes, the dance and choreo, the crowd... The show was marvel indeed!

She started it with the Formation and most of her songs from the latest album, Formation. I don't remember all those songs and lyrics by heart but surely I recognized some of those friendly beats.

love her dress here..

I didn't note down her song lists but for sure we didn't stop dancing :). Some upbeat tracks from the latest Lemonade album like Formation (I slay... i slay :)) and all-time hits like Naughty Girl, Bootylicious, Me, Myself and I, Crazy in love and more.

As for the wardrobe department, you have seen how cool they were. Super sexy, beautifully intricate designs and all in bold colors like flaming red. Even the white one, I guess in lace, was so beautiful. The rest came in bling-bling jacket, boots and gorgeous hat. You can see them on my photos here.

The choreo was fantastic! It's not a secret that Beyonce herself is a great dancer and her dancers are phenomenal. I love the last choreo where they were marching to the stage, bare foot, and that particular part of the stage was filled with water. How they danced beautifully and the splashing water made dramatic effects.Super cool :).

So, all in all.. It was a great concert.
I truly enjoyed every minute of it.
We concluded the show at almost midnight, caught the subway and went home humming her songs.

Thank you, Queen B :).

See you all in the next concert story .

UN in Blue

I have been spending so much time at the UN lately. We are in the middle of intense debates and endless meetings on the issues related to decolonization. For the last three week, I spend my 10-6, sometimes even more, at this headquarters.

As much as I was tied up with works (oh all those piles of documents and reports), I need some time off just to clear my mind.

Good thing that the UN Headquarters is beautifully situated at the banks of the East River.

I just need to get out of the building.
Look ahead, look up and inhale.
What a glorious blue sky.
What a beautiful day.
How blessed I am...

Works will always be there.
Waiting for you...
With its consuming hands, draining your energy,- and sometimes happiness, too.

peace....

But whenever you know when to stop...
To pause for a while..
To have a quick break for more precious things in your life...

Then life will always be filled with new hopes and spirit.

Hope, a gift from Latvia to the United Nations

Join us on Skywatch Friday and enjoy the lovely sky from all over the world :)

Wonderful Wednesday with Oh My Heartsie Girls

It has been a very interesting week for me and my family.
The holy month of Ramadhan is here and we are fully observing it. We are blessed that we still have the chance to once again observe it solemnly.

Summer days are long but we managed to get used to it, particularly since we have practiced it since last years and while in Geneva. Even Bo has started to have more full fasting days.
I am so proud that he manages to go to school and do his usual activities, although involving less energy-consuming ones.  He also joined the annual dance festival at his school :).

On a lighter note, I was privileged to see the World Tour Formation concert of Beyonce Knowles last week. Yes, Queen B was coming to NYC and what a night :).
Will give more stories on that on my next post.

And now we have our weekly linky party, as always, packed with great and inspiring links.
